Cleo ran to the office. Her heart was racing, stomach-churning, and ready to puke, but she had to get to Lucy. Cleo slides into the doorway and looks in. Lucy who's sitting straight across looks up from her feet and looks Cleo in the eyes. Unsure if she's allowed to, she silently asks to give her a hug. Cleo nods and Lucy rushes to her friend. They hug tighter than ever before with fear pushed to the back of there minds. As they pull apart Lucy again uses her expression to tell her friend that there was something she needed to spill. They escaped to the bathroom and began to talk.
"I'm so sorry you saw that Lucy! Why were you out there! What if you got hurt! How did he.. die??"
"Cleo breath in between sentences! I was out there because of your text... or maybe not your text and I don't know how.." Lucy trailed off
"I did send a text to you, but why did you go outside?" Cleo asked in confusion.
"It said to meet outside alone by the tree." Lucy started, "Wasn't that you?"
Lucy shoed Cleo the text, "No that wasn't me," Cleo pulled out her phone and showed her written text message to Lucy, "Wait, it didn't send! I just wanted to talk after school."
"Where were you all day?" Lucy had tears in her eyes. "I know you were mad, but you shouldn't have disappeared!"
"I'm sorry Lucy, I heard what you said outside the lunchroom and I realized I was being dumb." Cleo apologized.
"It's okay," she punched Cleo playfully, "you were there when I really needed you and I know you always will be." The girls hugged again and headed back to the office. Soon the police arrived and police tape was being put up. Lucy was asked to come back out to the scene to explain what happened. Cleo followed and stayed right by her friend. Disgusted, Cleo watched the police and medics zip the body into a black bag to ship off to a morgue. Something didn't feel right to Cleo, though.
A single raindrop fell down and hit Cleo's forehead. She looked up confused. Cleo saw the sun shining brightly slightly to the west, but couldn't see through the thick leaves of the tree. Suddenly a bigger drop falls to her head. This one felt heavier and thicker. She swipes the bit on her nose and looks at it. It was red. Unable to say anything Cleo looks up again where another glob of the thick, red liquid falls on her face. Cleo lets out a scream and looks down. She realized she was standing in blood. Her white shoes stained and her face dripping someone else's blood.
Cleo looks back up, now slightly back, and sees him in the tree. Brady was hanging there. First Butch next to the dumpster and then Brady in the oak tree. Lucy grabbed her friend and tried to calm her down, but she ended up sobbing with Cleo. Police and medics rush to them and bring them over to get washed and calm down. Still clinging to each other, they are covered with a blanket and left at the ambulance to cry.
Lucy's parents don't show up, but Cleo's parents offer to let her come over and stay with them for the night. Upstairs they stay silent, staring at random spots on the wall. Lucy finally breaks the silence.
"Why us? What did we do!?"
"I don't know Lucy." Cleo stares at the floor.
"Cleo..?" Lucy starts.
"Yes?"
"I did something stupid. I-I took something from the crime scene..." Lucy confessed.
"What? What did you take?" Cleo stared at her best friend.
"A-a note. It was for me." she started "Cleo, I'm scared."
Lucy pulled out a note from her back pocket and passed it over to Cleo. Cleo slowly opened it up and began to read out loud, quietly.
"If you don't back off him, Flynn's next and then Cleo, until no ones left."
Cleo couldn't get out a word, but she grabbed Lucy and pulled her into a hug. They cried on each other's shoulder in fear, hoping to wake up and find this was a dream, but it isn't a dream and they're not going to wake up with a happy ending as usual.
A/N: Sorry this chapter is a little shorter than usual. Tomorrow's chapter is going to be longer, though!
