Carter was the new boy at school. He had short blonde hair, dazzling blue eyes and a wicked smile. He was quiet and kept to himself often. He would often wait for others to walk into class before he did and sit in the back or the sides if he could. Joel couldn't help but look back at him every so often during classes.
Joel noticed that a few other boys would whisper then look at him and snicker. He hated them enough already. They had gotten into a few fights over the years but it never got far in their small school. Joel got through the rest of class, nothing important really happened. In the middle class, Joel saw his girlfriend Hayley go past and she blew him a kiss. He smiled and blew a kiss back. He ignored the comments he heard from the other side of the class. He could not wait until break to see her. They waited all weekend too see each other again. Outside of school they don't get to meet much. Her family is always up to something. Her mum coaches the local soccer team, her dad is in and out of the country for his job although he always forgot what he does. Her little brother Jack is just starting primary school and does sports all week. That's all he talks about but Joel doesn't mind. They all liked Joel thankfully. On rare occasions our families would have dinner together and it would be the best feeling.
As class ended, Joel practically ran out the room in search of Hayley. She would be waiting for him by the library as always and they would walk to the trees near the oval and watch people play sports while they ate. Hayley stood near the entrance of the library, she had her black hair up in a nice bun with a bow. Her uniform was neat and showed no trace of ever being messy. Her green eyes locked onto him and she smiled. If only she knew how much he loved it when she smiled. They kissed and he gave her a big hug and lifted her off the ground. She giggled a little and he put her down.
"So how was maths?" She said as they began walking.
"Oh you know. Same as every other day. Gotta study for a test in about two weeks so that will be fun." Joel said sarcastically.
"Let me know if you need help, I'm sure my mum would be happy too."
"Thanks, how is she anyway? I haven't seen your family in ages."
"We are doing well. Dad has to fly out again next week and mum has a soccer tournament this weekend. She seems stressed but I know she will do great. She always does. Jack is sick so he might not be able to play."
"Dang that sucks, I know how long he has been waiting for this tournament. I hope he gets better by then. We should get together soon for dinner."
"That's a great idea. I think there is a new restaurant opening soon, it'd be a great chance to check it out. I wonder what it's gonna be."
"Who knows. Hey, what class do you have next? I'll walk you there if you want?"
"I've got art then business with sport to finish up the day. It's upto you, I don't mind either way."
"Do you mind if we start walking there now? My next class is at the other end of the school and I can't be late again."
"Yeah sure, I'll just grab my things then we can go." Joel helped Hayley pack up and they began walking to her art class. Joel noticed Carter sitting by himself away from the crowds, writing in his book. Head down and earphones in. Joel wondered what he was listening to when he ran into a poll. Hayley couldn't stop laughing while trying to ask if he was ok. Joel laughed along and they kept walking. He kissed her hand and left her at the art block as the bell rang.
