Bright red leaves crunched under her feet as a breeze blew, adding more red and orange on the ground, ready to be trampled upon. And with every step she took, with every breaking of a brittle leaf, she realized the sound was coming from inside of her, too. He was leaving, and that was her heart, bearing the autumn of a new beginning.
She reached the shore of a small river that traversed through their little town. With time, it had carved a new path for itself. As so should she.
When he looked sideways at her, she thought of all the moments he'd done that. His hair, tousling in the wind, like the pages of a book caught in a breeze. Moments she thought would last forever.
She wished there had been a better time. And in his gray eyes, she saw it too. He wished time would've had a better timing for them.
Those gray eyes shone like the moon at night. Like the calm after a storm, when the clouds part, you see the moon and just the sight of it teethers you back to safety. The storm has passed, for now.
But now when she looked at them, she knew their battle was far from over. A new whirlwind was gaining strength. To rip their lives apart, just like the breeze had done to the leaves. And those gray orbs, just the sight of them, would anchor her. She knew.
But not today. She only wished she could live in the moment and look at him forever. He wished it, too. To look in her obsidian eyes that'll always root him, no matter how far he strayed. But it was all a wishful thinking, was it not? The reality wasn't a manifestation of their deepest desires.
And so they parted. No words were said. None needed to be said. For they both knew, if you truly love someone, sometimes, the best way you can prove so, is to let them go.
