Dim your eyes and light your ears.
Let night wash away your fears.
Feel the ship's rock on oceans churning;
Be lulled by flickering candles burning.
The rains fall in sweet lullabies,
Whispering their soft goodnights.
Sea swallows sun and in warmth does sleep;
Clearing night skies peer to the deep.
And if you listen carefully,
From oceans blue kreens harmony.
Hope they carved from singing whales;
From bones, from eyes, spoken in tales.
Listen, listen closely.
The whalesongs rise from waters holy.
Throughout the frigid nights they sing
Of waters warm and calves playing.
Listen, listen, closer still;
They sing of life and endless krill. But as waters bloody from rising suns,
Their songs fade out, one by one.
Open your eyes, child--feel the light.
Feel the burn of winter's bite.
Waves are crashing against black bows;
We reach land upon the morrow.
Hush now, child. Do not cry.
The whales return upon the night.
Hush now, child. Do not fret.
Your first whalesong you shall hear yet.
