I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping annoyingly outside my window. I gave myself a very abnormal stretch and a yawn that sounded like I was going to war, pushing the covers from my body I turned to the black clock sitting on my bedside table which read eight o'clock.

"Eight am! Holy shit, I'm late!" I yelled, scrambling from my bed and into my bathroom.

After finishing my morning routine as quick as I could and filling my mug with a hot cup of coffee I headed off to work. I arrived about one minute late and bolted straight to the receptionist to get my schedule for the day.

"Morning Jess! Lovely day isn't it?" I asked cheerfully.

"Good morning doctor M! It's gonna be a good day, I can feel it. Oh, by the way, doctor Jameson took your gunshot wound patient down for the x-ray, lemme get those results for you." She said handing me a paper.

"Thanks, dear, see you later."

Getting to Mr. Romano's room was a bit of trouble because I was trying to read his results and walk at the same time. After bumping into a few people I entered his room to see him arguing with one of the nurses.
"It's okay Anne, I can take it from here," I said kindly. With a smile, Anne left the room and I began making my way to my stubborn patient.

"Good morning Mr. Romano! What seems to be the problem? You should be resting, not fretting." I said sternly trying to hook the clipboard into his bedrail. My stubborn patient gave me a loud huff and started ignoring me.

"You know, ignoring someone is kind of rude...especially if they're trying to help you," I said softly.

With a turn, he said, "I just want to get out of this damn hospital! I feel invalid, I can't do anything! I need to be free!" He said getting irritated.

"Okay...how about after I give you your medication you and I take a walk in the garden out back?" I asked.

"Sure, that would be wonderful! Thank you." He said sweetly.

After administering treatment to Mr. Romano, I helped him into his wheelchair and we set off to the beautiful garden that was built by my dad back in twenty-fourteen. I've always enjoyed coming here during my breaks, just to get a breath of fresh air and some peace and quiet. We entered a large open space, surrounded by different varieties of flowers, in the middle of the garden was a pretty water fountain with lovely designs; a few benches loitered here and there. I took Mr. Romano to my favourite spot and planted myself on one of the brown benches.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" I said softly. I turned to Mr. Romano only to see that he was looking at me with a smile.

"It's wonderful. So dear, tell me...how do you know my son? I see the way he looks at you and by the way, call me Rick," my patient said.

With a sigh I started talking, "You know Rick, it's kind of complicated. Lorenzo has been the love of my life since I was a teenager, I thought we'd grow old together. I loved him more than I loved myself. I trusted him but he did me bad...I mean I'm not one to judge, we're all humans and we make mistakes. I hold no grudges against him."

"Hmm, I understand. I've never seen my son like this before...so heartbroken, guilty. I think he knows what a terrible mistake he made and I'm not just saying this because he's my child. I'm saying this because everyone deserves a second chance, whether it's for closure or to work things out." He said, sweetly.

"Well, he asked me out for coffee so we can have the closure we need. I'm meeting him tomorrow seeing that it's Saturday and my day off." I said, getting a bit excited. As Rick was going to reply, my watch beeped signaling lunchtime.

As we slowly approached the cafeteria, I helped my patient get his food and took him back to his room. He grabbed my hands and as I turned towards him he looked up at me, "give my son a chance, he's lost without you. I can see it in his eyes. You're a wonderful young lady. I think he's realised what he lost," he said, letting go of my hand. With a small smile, I left Mr. Romano to have lunch as I went along with my other duties thinking about what he said.

Not paying attention to where I was going for the second time, I bumped into a very hard body. Looking up, I got caught in his very captivating blue eyes.

Lorenzo.

"Oh! I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention." I blurted.

"No worries, I wasn't looking either. How are you? Are we still on for tomorrow?" Lorenzo asked, his cheeks getting slightly pink.

"Uh, yeah! We're still on...mmm, say one-thirty?" I mumbled clearing my throat.

"Y-yeah, that sounds perfect. Mia, you have no idea how sorr-" Lorenzo was cut off by the intercom.

"Doctor Mia, there's an emergency case in the ER, you're needed there now. I repeat it's an emergency case." Jess said a bit frantic.

"I gotta go, I'm sorry. We'll continue this tomorrow." I said with a smile hurriedly walking off.

After spending half an hour in the ER treating a little boy who had an allergic reaction and checking on my patients I was exhausted. I grabbed my belongings from my office, waved Jess and some of the other doctor's goodbye. I got into my car and headed home. Playing some soft music I began thinking about tomorrow. 'What was I going to wear?' 'Is this a date?' 'I hope I look good.'

'Ugh! Snap out of it! Stop acting like a lovesick teenager!' My inner voice yelled.

And so, like every night...I arrived home, did my usual nighttime routine, had a small dinner and headed off to bed hoping that tomorrow would turn out okay.
