CHAPTER 7
TRIS POV
We walk through an unfamiliar doorway with bland gray walls and small rooms. We look around, trying to picture memories and faces in these narrow halls but nothing is familiar. I walk up to the fireplace where a family portrait leans against the wall, old and dusty. I stare at it, looking at what I want to be familiar faces but come up blurry in my mind. I barely recognize myself.
"So, anything coming back to you," Tobias asks.
"If there was anything I would tell you," I remark rudely. I set the photo back down before I may feel the desire to throw it, "Just, everything's so frustrating! You want me to remember you, remember this stupid house, and yet you give me no reason to! What makes you think I want to remember, huh? Maybe I just want to forget."
I feel my ears turn hot and I look around at the plain walls. I realize he hasn't answered me yet. I walk up the stairs and into one of the rooms. I glare out the window at the blazing sun. In the distance I see the Hub, still blinking even in the morning hours.
I hear footsteps behind me and I turn, expecting to see Tobias's face, but instead all I see is an empty hall. I walk out of the room suspiciously. I hear the other bedroom door close softly and I walk towards it, creaking open the door. I look in and see a woman with blonde hair.
She notices me and puts her finger to her lips, motioning me inside. I walk in the door and she locks it, allowing me to sit down. I realize she is in a surgical uniform.
"Hi, I'm Cara," the woman says. The name sounds so familiar it is unbearable. She smiles creepily at me.
"I'm Tris," I say. She smiles at me. I see the blood on her gown and wonder what it possibly could be from.
"I understand you have a... predicament," she says, "I see you have lost your memory... I have the solution."
"What could you possibly do for me?" I ask suspiciously. I raise my voice, about to call Tobias when she speaks.
"Oh... you don't actually trust that dim witted man downstairs, do you? I thought you were a much smarter girl than that..." she says seriously, "Don't ever trust him... he is the one who did this to you... Erased your memory, I mean..."
I look at her puzzled, not knowing what to say. She reaches in her robe and finally pulls out a syringe filled with a dark liquid. She hands it to me.
"This will help you..." she says. Suddenly there is a knock on the door, and Cara curses under her breath. "Use it when he is not around," she says, "He will try to stop you..."
Suddenly, Tobias kicks the door in. When he sees Cara, his eyes darken and he runs at her, grabbing her neck. She shrieks and I back away, shocked. Her face begins to turn blue as his hands become tighter around her neck, his muscles pulsing. I watch Cara, horrified, when she makes a slight motion with her hands, almost like a syringe. He points at him before she becomes unconscious.
I plunge the syringe into his back...
