Gaius explained he had seen the man staring at me. He felt like part of the prior day was missing from his memory. There was something about how he woke up in his bed that felt off. The last thing he remembered was reading something. Merlin listened with great care while Gaius spoke. If it weren't so late he would have headed off into woods to try to find any trace of this man. He couldn't bring this up to Arthur. He would question why someone with magic was following her. Gaius tried to down play the issue, but Merlin couldn't let it go.

"Gaius, what do you know about her mother?" Merlin inquired.

"As far as I know she was a sorcerer like you."

"Is there any other type of sorcerer? One that might have stronger magic than mine?"

"Nothing comes to mind. I knew her mother for a short time. She only came to me about her magic before the great purge."

"I see."

Merlin stood up. He headed to the door. Gaius stopped him only to ask where he was going at this hour. Merlin said something about the tavern. Which was not his usual cover story. Gaius shrugged it off while Merlin walked out. He snuck past guards. Slipped down hallways. He ended up in a stairwell that led underground. There he found a dragon sitting on a large rock. His leg chained, keeping him prisoner in the cavern.

"Good to see you, Merlin," he spoke with a smile on his face. One that hinted he already knew why he had come to this cavern, "you've been staying away."

"I've been busy, Kilgharrah. There's a girl..."

"Ah yes, the scion. I'd sense that magic anywhere."

"Is a scion the same as-"

"You are two different entities of magic."

"What does that mean?"

"We haven't spoken in a while about you freeing me. You are not going to leave me down here to rot...are you?"

"I made a promise. I can't do that quite yet."

"Then I have nothing to say to you."

"Wait. Please. I need help. I don't understand what she is. And someone is following her. If you help me protect her, I will free you."

"Is that a promise, young warlock?" Kilgharrah settled back into the stone.

"Yes. It is. If you can promise not to harm anyone in Camelot."

The dragon gave a curt smile. His head leaned down toward Merlin. Kilgharrah made no promise to spare those in Camelot who wronged him. Merlin waited with bated breath.

"The scions are the physical manifestation of magic. They do not need to learn spells. They do not need to speak incantations. Their very will can make magic happen." The dragon smiled, watching the awe wash over Merlin's face. "Magic was born from the first scion. Their numbers have dwindled over the years. She could rewrite reality if she wished it."

"And she wants me to teach her magic?" Merlin sputtered.

Kilgharrah roared with laughter. Merlin crossed his arms. She didn't need him to help her. It was starting to seem like she had more innate power than he realized.

"The girl asked you to teach her?" Kilgharrah laughed. "She would have better luck teaching you magic."

"This isn't funny. She's not used to how people in Camelot treat-"

"Nor should she be. She doesn't have to accept Uther's idiotic reign."

Merlin turned around and headed out of the cavern. Kilgharrah called a reminder that one day Merlin would have to free him. By the time Merlin arrived back to his quarters, Gaius was asleep. He crept past into his room. His eyes drifted toward the door to my room. There were so many questions he had for me. But I wouldn't have the answers he searched for. It was a long time before he found sleep that night.
