"Well team, let's let the fun times roll on!" Benjamin said with a goofy smile on his face as he glanced between me and Jeremy.
I stared at him blankly, I was not exactly sure if anything that has happened or will happen in the future could be classified as anything even close to fun.
"Alrighty then, no fun, got it!"He said sobering up. "Jeremy, tell me what you know about Spirit Guides so 1) I can help explain both your destinies and yes you have a set path boy and 2) because you need more knowledge of the spirit world to help Lia reach her full potential." Benjamin said suddenly completely serious.
Jeremy nodded to himself and appeared to be thinking hard before saying, "Spirit Guides are assigned by the Moon Goddess to people who need to posses the intelligence of such an entity for whatever reason. Spirit Guides are an easier way of connecting to the Goddess directly and they have some of her attributes and powers. People can only become Spirit Guides based on acts of pure courage or devotion in their previous life." Jeremy finished with what seemed to be a perfect dictionary definition and something I probably would not have remembered.
A surprised look took Benjamin's face before it vanished and morphed back into his signature easy-going expression, he chuckled before stating calmly, "Well this will be even easier than I thought. Jeremy as you know I am Lia's guide but, I've also been tasked with supplying you with advice as needed. You are very savvy of Spirit Guides and the Spirit World in general but I will have to tell you my own personal story so you will have a sort of understanding as to why I was assigned as a Spirit Guide to the two most important people in the our world other than our very own Goddess."
"I was about 18 years old in 1918, France, and a soldier for what was known as the Allied Powers during World War 1. Spanish Influenza had taken many lives quickly and mercilessly during the time, we'd either watch our brothers die on the battlefield or die in the hospitals in our arms. The news of the epidemic and its harsh effects had hit the Allied Powers after harming the Central Powers first. A friend of mine, Dominic Rinaldi, was planning on deserting our assigned area to be with his family in case the epidemic hit us. I did my best to help him but leaving assignment had serious detriments for him, me and his family. " He took a deep breath seemingly lost in the story and it appeared hard for him to contain the deep sadness in his eyes.
"Our legion was to go into battle and immediately following the incoming battle Dom had planned to make his escape. As both sides began shooting at one another, desperate to end the battle quickly, I searched for Dominic wanting to help him plan a smooth exit. Just as I reached Dominic, shots rang out loudly and I saw my greatest friend, my brother crumple to the ground. I ran over to him, gathering his body up in my arms as I watched death slowly take my only friend from me selfishly. Dominic reached into the flap of his jacket with the little strength that he had left and handed me a letter. "Please my dear friend, please give this to Maria."He whispered weakly holding out the envelope and then with a smile his eyes shut for the last and final time. A tear slid down my cheek and that is where my journey began." He paused for a moment before starting again.
"I tried my best to honor Dominic's last request and took his last name to help in locating his family. It was easier to gather information about relatives during the time period. However, on the way from France as I was trying to make my way to Italy, there was a tragic train accident* in which I lost my life. As life escaped me and I felt myself dying, all of sudden there was no pain and the Goddess was in front of me. She told me that the way in which I died was so valiant that she made me a spirit guide because of my pure heart. The fact that I risked my entire life in order to ensure my friend's dying wish came true was something that really resonated with her. I haven't been called on to perform any of my duties as a spirit guide til now." Benjamin finished completing his tale.
I stared at him for a while wondering how one person could go through so much in only 18 years of life. Benjamin's heart-breaking story made me appreciate my current situation as an honorary Dark family member and I wished from the bottom of my heart that Benjamin could have found people as wonderful as I did in his short time. "Now that, that's off my shoulders, Jeremy you can begin teaching Lia how exactly to call upon spirits whilst I supervise." He said with a smirk taking a seat on the couch surprisingly. Jeremy muttered something to himself rolling his eyes before eventually turning towards me.
"I'm not very good at this, unsurprisingly I don't have much time to practice these days, but here it goes. Okay Lia, I'm going to say a phrase then another repeat the second one only, while you're saying the second phrase think of happy thoughts and a nice spirit should appear, as long as I'm doing this right" He finished, muttering the last part to himself. "Invoco omnes formas vitae, ut assitst hoc directionem gerentis de spirts. Crede en dea." Jeremy finished the latin phrases.** "Crede en dea." I repeated thinking of all the good times I'd had with Jonathan and Kara growing up, those were truly some of the happiest moments in my life.
Suddenly as I tried to draw upon more happy memories between my siblings and I, I had begun to run out. My mind quickly drifted to more recent things that had transpired between my siblings and I and their almost unreasonable hatred for me. Out of the ground a black smoke drifted up and in front of me and a hideous face angrily hissed.
I stared at Jeremy with wide eyes confused as to what was happening, the spirit looked anything but nice which contradicted what he had told me. As the black smoke started to encompass me Jeremy quickly dashed in front of me, mumbled a phrase, and it all vanished as if it had never been there at all. "Oh Lia," he said turning to me a concerned look on his face "Please tell me you're alright, the thoughts you were thinking couldn't have been nice ones were they?" Jeremy finished holding me close. And for the first time in a long time I felt butterflies from someone's touch.

* The great train crash of 1918 actually happened in the USA in Tennessee. ** The latin was from google translate so it may be wrong and it was basically about calling upon the spirits and believing in the goddess.
