I feel the car jerk to a stop as I wake up from the car ride, seeming to have fallen asleep during the ride. I look out the window to see the police department. Edward and I get out of the car with all our belongings in hand. We walk into the building and sign in at the front desk. Edward shoves his bag into my hands as he strides behind the desk to the phone.
"I'll meet you in our office. Get the evidence out of the bag and lay it out on the table. I have to make this phone call." He begins to turn the dial to put the number in as I walk away, not asking any questions.
I take the clear bags that hold the evidence out of Edward's bag and lay them all out in a line on the extra table in his office. Just as I finish, Edward walks into the room.
"Get ready to interrogate someone. They're on their way here now," he says as he enters the room.
"That's who you were calling I'm guessing," I turn to him as I speak.
"Exactly right Joseph. On my way out of the apartment building, I stopped by the receptionist and asked for details about the visitors of Maria Templeton. She gave me the name of the last person to go up to her apartment, who just happens to be the person who found Maria dead. I just called him and he's on his way now."
"Did she tell you anyone else?"
"She did say that her manager, William Black was the last person to check in to see her before she was found dead. But he's not who we're questioning at the moment, so let's focus on who we will be interrogating in a matter of minutes."
"I'm guessing you'll do most of the questioning then?" He turns to me as I ask him this question.
"Of course. You'll just take down notes. Now, Duncan Hodel will be here soon, so get the evidence and follow me." He starts to head out of the door, leaving me to follow behind him.
I quickly pick up the evidence that he just had me lay out and follow him through the halls of the department into a room. The room is empty except for two tables and three chairs. There is one table in the middle of the room with two chairs on one side of it and one chair on the other side. The other table is in the corner of the room, on the same side as the door and the two chairs. I lay all the evidence out of the second table in the corner. Seconds later, I hear a knock at the door.
"Come in," Edward loudly announces as he strides through the door.
Two men come in escorting a third man. They lead the man to the single chair on the other side of the table. They force him to sit down in the chair, nods at Edward and I and leave the room.
I turn to Edward and whisper in my lowest voice, "When you said you called him and he was on his way, what did you really mean?"
"I meant that I called two police officers, who then went to get this guy and escort him back here. I couldn't just call him saying he is a suspect for murder and expect him to show up." Once he says this, he shoves past me and sits down in one of the seats.
I sit next to him, pull a notepad and pen out of my coat and nod at him to begin the questioning.
"Duncan Hodel I'm guessing?"
"Yes sir"
"I'm Edward Jones, the lead detective on this case. This is my partner, Joseph Samerson. Do you know why you're here Duncan?"
"I'm a suspect for a murder is all I know."
"You are correct. Maria Templeton was found dead in her apartment last night. You are the one who found her, correct?"
