Chapter 6
"I promise you man, you're doing the equation wrong! You have to use x squared!" I tell Tony, while showing him the formula. He looks at me with a sour face.
"But I got the same answer with the formula I used, so it's fine!"
"No it's not! If you keep using that formula you'll start to use it on quizzes and tests, and then end up getting some stuff wrong!"
"But I don't feel like erasing all this" He whined.
This boy. I sigh as I rub the side of my head.
"Ton, you can erase it later. But stop using the wrong formula okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, no promises" He says waving his hand at me.
Geez. Soon after there's a knock on the door, before Jessica comes in.
"Tony, dad says food is ready" She says quickly. Our eyes make meet for a second before she turns around and goes back out, closing the door.
I look at the door and groan.
"What's wrong with you? You like my dad's cooking" Tony gives me a weird face.
"She just totally ignored me...AGAIN!" I lean back in my chair.
Tony gets out of his chair and heads for the door. "How sad for you" He says in a baby voice. "Now get up! Let's go eat!"
I reluctantly get out of my chair and head down to the dinning room with Tony.
When we enter the room, the familiar scent of heavenly cooking hits me. I'm pretty sure if my mouth was open, I would be drooling right about now.
"Alright! Everything is done, takes your seats and we can all dig in" Mr. Waters says as he puts the last dish of food on the table. Mr. Waters seats at the head of the table, while me and Tony sit of one side and Jessica and Mrs. Waters sits on the other. I smile to myself, seeing as Jessica chose to take the seat in front of me. Maybe she's starting to warm up to me again?
"This looks great dad!" Tony almost yelled gleefully as he gets some of everything.
I start to get some of his famous mashed potatoes and a piece of the juicy seasoned steak. It still amazes me that Mr. Waters doesn't use a grill for the steak, and yet it comes out looking like a 5-star chief cooked it. I guess it's more about the cook's skill than the equipment used. I reach out to get some of the broccoli too when Jessica reaches for them too.
"Oh...Sorry. Here you go" I say holding the serving spoon to her. It seemed like she was thinking about it but went for a different food to get herself. I guess she's not as warmed up to me as I thought.
Mrs. Waters notices this little transaction between us and looks between her daughter and me before speaking.
"Amber?"
"Yes Mrs...A.. Ann?"
"Did you do something?"
I was a little taken aback by her question. Why is it that I did something?
"No..." I try to say but Mrs. Waters cuts me off.
"...Because Jessica only ignores you when you do something"
Why is that so true. I sigh in defeat.
"Well I did do something, but I don't really know what" I said honestly.
"Haha, that's a new one. Usually you know what you did and she'd forgive you instantly" Mrs. Waters says amused. "Well! I'm sure you'll figure it out, we all know Jessie can't ignore you forever. Even as a kid she'd start to give in, in a matter of hours and then she'd cling to you while..."
Mrs. Waters stopped talking when she noticed Jessica glaring daggers at her. Her face was slightly red.
"Well, you get what I'm saying" Mrs. Waters said with a grin.
After dinner was over, I got all my stuff together and headed to the front door.
"It was great having you here Amber! Say hi to your parents for us okay?" Mrs. Waters said while giving me a hug.
"I will"
"Oh! Amber, could you tell your dad that I'll pick him up around noon on Saturday?" Mr. Waters asked.
"Yeah! I'll let him know" I said with a smile. My dad and Mr. Waters were on a community baseball team together, and they had a game this Saturday. Tony gave me a quick nod before heading up to his room, to probably get the rest of his work done, leaving me and Jessica by the door.
"Um...I'll see you tomorrow Jess" I say as I open the door.
"Goodnight" She said in a quiet voice.
I had a big smile on my face.
"Aww, you do have a voice"
"Shut up!" She said trying to hide a small smile.
"Night"
Was the last thing I said before heading home, smiling all the way there.
I got her to talk to me.
