Chapter 4

It was finally lunch time, and Tony still won't tell me anything. When we entered the lunch room, we saw Jessica and Brianna. Tony started walking up to Brianna, his legs were visibly shaking.

"H.h..hh"

Sometimes I worry for him.

"Hey Brianna, how was your classes so far?" He finally got out.

"They were good Mrs. Smith, my Algebra teacher, was kind of a funny weird and..." Brianna started happily talking about all her classes and teachers.

I looked at Jessica, who was next to Brianna. Our eyes met for a second, but she looked away in an instant, looking a little upset. She said something to Brianna and headed to the lunch line.

Seriously! What did I do?!

The worst thing in the world, is when Jessica is mad at me. Even before I realized I had a crush on her, it was the worst. Anytime I was over Tony's house as a kid, we would always play video games in his living room. Jessica would always want to play with us and I would give her my controller. She was 6 and me and Tony were 7, so I was always nice to the younger kids. But the minute she would lose, she would blame it on me for some unknown reason and be mad at me for the whole day! It was not pleasant! When she was mad at me, she would ignore me and hide all my things so it would be hard to leave, because I'd have to find them again. It was really annoying! She stopped hiding my things when we got to middle school though, but she would still ignore me when she's mad.

Sometimes I wonder why I even like her? For most of my life, all I ever thought of her was 'My best friend's little sister' or the annoying girl who would hide my stuff. But, in my final year of middle school something happened that changed that. It was dismissal, and all the kids were outside, since we lived close to the school me, Tony, and Jessica would always walk home together. But Jessica was late to our normal meet up spot, so me and Tony went to look for her. When we finally found her, she was on the ground, tears streaming down her face, and it looked like she scrapped her knee. Above her were these middle school boys who were just standing there laughing. Tony ran to his sister's side. When Jessica started to cry harder, my heart just dipped and the next thing I knew I was on top of the boys punching them. It took two teachers to pull me off them. It was the first fight I had ever been in, and it was the first time I realized how important she was to me. Not just as my friend's little sister, but something else. It was the first time I ever got yelled at by my parents too, apparently, I broke one of the kid's nose. I think after that was when I stopped calling her Jess too, I would get too embarrassed to do it.

I sighed. I walked over to Tony and Brianna.

"Tony, your sister's mad at me"

"No dip sherlock" He said, as if it was obvious.

"But I didn't do anything!" He just sighed at my statement.

"Obviously you did if she's mad" He put his hand on my shoulder.

"Why don't you ask her? Or you can just say sorry" Brianna suggested.

I sighed, then nodded and went to where Jessica was in the lunch line, leaving Brianna and Tony to talk. I walked up next to her.

"Jessica..." I said quietly. I knew she still heard me, but she was pretending she didn't.

"Jessica" She was still moving forward.

This girl. I grabbed her arm softly, so she would drop her food.

"Jess, please. Can you talk to me? You know I hate it when you ignore me" She finally stopped and looked at me.

"What?" She said with a blank face.

"Look, I'm sorry. Whatever I did to make you mad I'm really, really sorry" I told her, putting on the best puppy dog eyes I can make.

She cracked a smile. "You don't even know why you're sorry"

"I know that I don't like it when you're mad at me. Besides you almost never tell me why you're mad at me" I said smiling at her.

She returns the smile. "I don't tell you, because you always already know why I'm upset"

"Okay true, but I don't know why this time" I stated.

She smiled and leaned in close.

"Then figure it out" She whispered into my ear and started to walk toward a table.

"Wait! Does that mean you're still mad at me?!"

She just gave me a sly smile and continued walking.

WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN?!
