~Provence~

We waited for hours, but Terry never showed up. At first, we thought he was late, which was a normal occurance for him, but he was too late. He wouldn't even answer his phone. The concerning part was that we saw a cone shape of dirt and wind near the relative location of his house.

"We have to go see if Terry's home," I decided, starting to sprint. Lee followed.

On the way, we saw a few homes destroyed, fire hydrants scattered across the street, and even some dead cats. We weren't even halfway to Terry's house when we found a suspicious corpse on the ground.

"No way," I breathed, stopping in the middle of the road, scared to go any closer.

"Either that's Terry, or some other guy with the same haircut," Lee squinted at him. It sounded like he was just joking around, but based on the expression on his face, he was dead serious.

I slowly inched my way to the corpse. It was definitely Terry. A sigh escaped my lips before I leaned down to check his pulse. Nothing. He wasn't even breathing, and there was no sign of movement.

"Lee, go take cover," I demanded, "I have to go somewhere real quick."

Then I'm coming," he insisted. After some arguing, he eventually just ended up following me.

We were going to Terry's dad's garage. He used to be a mechanic. We needed to go there to get a ride so that we could go tell Terry's mom what had happened. Lee wasn't too fond of the idea, but he didn't want me to go alone. However, in order to get there we had to cross the highway.

Lee went first. He made perfect timing and got across the white line just as a car zoomed past him.

"You're gonna die if you don't run!" he warned me, yelling over the sounds of the traffic trying to get home from the tornado.

A gust of wind hit me, giving me the momentum to dash across.

It came suddenly... The impact of a truck trying to rush home to his family who were hiding in the basement. He didn't expect a fifteen year old girl to be out and about crossing the highway.

I saw another set of wheels from a minivan hurdling my way. Everything in me wanted to roll out of the way, but I couldn't move. My whole body felt broken.

"Provence!" I got one more glance at Lee, who was screaming my name repeatedly from the other side. He couldn't do anything to prevent this. It was all my fault. I killed everyone and everything he had.

Now it was up to him to save the world. Even then, I didn't expect him to do so. He would be alone. His parents were still in the hospital, and in a matter of seconds, we would all be dead.

I closed my eyes, waiting for the wheels to take me to death. I'm not sure what would happen when I left this place, but I had to be ready for it.

VROOM was the last noise I heard before I couldn't feel or hear anything.

In this story, I wasn't the hero.
