Sam could barely hear it, but she knew Lauren's cabin was much closer, and could hear it better.

"It's that noise again, but all the girls heard it this time, and when we looked out no one could see anything,  I freaked out and ran here," said Lauren, jumping as something moved in the tree nearest them. Sam looked up, but seeing nothing, she returned to her conversation.

"Do you believe me now that you should tell someone?" Sam said.

"It probably wouldn't help," said a voice from the above them. Both girls looked up and saw that, between the branches, there was a boy. Sam couldn't tell what he looked like since he was so deep in the shadows. "Who are you, and why are you here?" Sam said.

"I'm here because I saw you in the canoe looking at Jaron. He acted weird the rest of the day. I'm his friend and I figured I could find out at least what your name is." He said. Sam felt herself blush, then said, "I won't say my name until you come down and tell me yours."

At that, he jumped down swiftly and crossed his arms. "Now will you tell me?" He said.

"First tell me your name, then I'll say."

"Fine. My name is Travis Dowcher. How about now?"

Sam sighed, then said, "My name is Sam Grady, and I think you need a better explanation for breaking the rules, and coming into our camp."

"I overheard you and your friend talking about the noise while you were canoeing in the lake, I didn't go canoeing and went exploring instead. I found the little cove and when I saw you guys I hid behind a tree," Travis admitted.

"Well then what do you know about it? Sam said

"I know that at the boys camp, we can hear it better and that it's been going on for about a year, so the older boys scare the younger ones by starting a rumor that It's a ghost of a mental psycho maniac."

Lauren looked up from her shoes to Travis when he mentioned "mental maniac," and Travis grinned at her.

"So no one knows what it really is? At all?" Sam asked.

"Probably not. I sure don't."

"Maybe we should go up the mountain and see what it is."

"You would be brave enough to go up there? I thought you were a bratty wuss like the other girls here," He said with a flicker of respect in his eyes, and Sam thought about Sarah and her friend's faces after she splashed them with water.

"Yea, you could say they are."

"Sam," Lauren said with a little worry, "Do you really want to go up that mountain? We have no idea what it is. It just seems like a bad idea."

"Well, I think we should. It would be fun, like something from one of those mystery books. And then it will turn out to be something completely harmless so we can all get over it and maybe get some sleep," She said, shooting a glance at Lauren.

"I'm not letting you go up there alone, so I'm coming," said Lauren.

"Count me in. I want to see what it is," said Travis, and I'll bring Jaron too. He'll be glad to come."

"Fine," said Sam, "We'll meet back at the edge of that cove in the lake at midnight tomorrow, and be back by morning. OK?" They all agreed and said goodbye, but they didn't notice a shadowed figure disappear from the cabin's window.
