Sorry this is all I have right now,I know it's really short, but I had finals and had to study. I will write more over Christmas break!!! I will probably post tomorrow or the day after.

-----------------------------------------------

Sarah walked back down the mountain trail thinking

about Jaron and Sam. Maybe she herself was a little jealous, but scolded herself that Jaron was a lying jerk and Sam could go ahead and hurt herself. She thought back to the day she was out for a walk and saw Jaron through the window of a restaurant, having dinner with another girl. She remembered running home and slamming her room door shut and burying her face in her pillow. He obviously saw her outside the restaurant with her shocked and hurt face, because the next day he had tried to tell her that he was just having dinner with a cousin who was visiting. She had refused to talk to him and left a note on his door saying that it was officially over. Did he really lie, or was he actually telling the truth?

-----------------------------------------------------

The four of them walked along in an awkward silence. As much as they wanted, no one dared ask Jaron if what Sarah said was true. Sam's ankle hurt worse as they went through more rough terrain. She thought she would give just about anything to sit down for a while, but she didn't want to slow everyone down. Then, fifteen minutes later, Lauren wanted to take a break, and Sam was grateful for a rest off her ankle. They found two fallen trees facing each other and sat down. Sam put her hurt ankle on her knee and rubbed it tenderly. Jaron sat with Lauren on one log, and Travis sat with Sam.

"Sam, what time is it?" Travis asked. She checked her phone.

"1:58 in the morning."

"You said the noise always started at exactly two?"

"Yep."

"And that it's a high pitched ring?"

"Actually it's more of a screeching sound, like nails on a chalkboard."

"And we've got to be really close by now right?"

"I think that was the goal," Jaron added.

"So what happens if we don't find whatever it is tonight?"

"We could come back, or we could call it a lost cause and leave it alone," said Lauren, "Which I highly suggest."

"Oh, don't be a wimp," teased Sam. Lauren grinned and threw a pebble at her, then went back to fiddling with a twig.

"So, we wait here until we hear the noise, and then try to find it?" Lauren asked.

"That's pretty much it."

So they all sat silently, listening to nocturnal creatures forage for food, or the wind brushing the trees, making the leaves dance. Sam thought about how loud the forest really was at night. It seemed like the deeper they went, the louder it got. She was broken out of her thoughts by an almost impossibly high note. Everyone's hands flung to their ears, trying to block out the sound. They had all dropped their flashlights, throwing them into complete darkness. Then the note got even higher and all of them dropped to the ground. They fell into unconsciousness until after the note ended five minutes later.
