Sam opened her eyes and found herself staring into pitch blackness. All she knew was that she had a bad headache, so she laid still and closed her eyes. Minutes later she slowly sat up and groped around for her flashlight and shone it around her. Jaron and Lauren were sitting up looking like they had headaches and were just as confused as she was. Her light moved to Travis, who was now stirring and starting to wake up.

"Is everyone okay?" asked Jaron through the silence.

"What the heck was that?" Sam whispered, as Travis moved into a sitting position.

"I think that was the weirdest thing I've ever gone through," said Jaron, looking from person to person.

"I'm surprised my eardrums didn't blow out,"said Lauren.

"I think mine did," added Travis.

"So now what?" asked Lauren.

"We go back," said Sam, standing up carefully, and when she saw the strange expression on Jaron and Travis' face, she added, "I don't want to risk anyones life or even their ears for something that should be left to the police. Let's just head back to camp, alright?" The boys nodded and started to stand up, while Lauren still sat. Sam walked over to her and asked, "Are you OK?"

"Yes, that just freaked me out."

"Don't worry, we're going back to camp now."

"Thanks," she said perking up a little. They stood up and started their descent down the mountain in a line with Sam at the end again. A half an hour in, Sam looked around her with the feeling of someone watching them and kept seeing shadows move out of the corner of her eye. She shook it off thinking that she had gone crazy, but to prove herself wrong, she nonchalantly picked up a rock and threw it at the next shadow she saw move. She was surprised to hear a rustling of leaves as someone drew away from the spot where the she threw the rock. She immediately shone her flashlight to where she heard it and saw a man crouched behind a bush. She let out a little shriek, and stepped back, but then got her courage back. The others began to turn around and she ran toward the man, but he got a head start and was already running off into the forest. She heard the others call after her, but she ran until she couldn't see or hear the man anymore. Sam stood for a minute, listening to the wind rustling in the leaves. That was the wind right? She flickered her light in every direction, certain that the man was there somewhere. Her eyes fell on a particularly dark spot and walked toward it cautiously. Sam stopped abruptly when she felt that something wasn't right - there was more than one person watching her. Sam then turned back and ran - straight into Lauren, Travis and Jaron who had confused expressions on their faces.

"Someone was following us, and there might be more."

"So you chased him?" asked Travis.

Sam shrugged. "What was I supposed to do?"

"Anything but that."

"That was really stupid running after a man who was following us in the dark," said Jaron staring at the ground.

"Whatever. Let's get out of here before he decides to come back," said Sam, knowing that he was  still thinking about Sarah following them and having that outburst.

They walked carefully down the steep slope and nearly tripped several times, so they walked even slower. Sam checked her cell-phone again. 2:27. They had plenty of time to get back to camp, she thought, so they could go as slow as they wanted. Sam hoped that they would take as long as they could, because personally, she didn't want the excitement to end. But putting everyone including herself in that kind of danger would be just plain stupid, and besides, Lauren was pretty freaked out, and not that she wasn't herself, but she was too curious to leave it alone. Maybe the boys would come back with her, she thought, but she stopped and reminded herself that it wasn't just some noise, it was something that could cause harm. Still, she couldn't leave this unsolved. She would have to go back by herself.
