Maybe It Was The Stare

The rest of the day was a complete blur. I made a couple new friends but at this point all friends were new friends. Ash texted at lunch to see how my day was

“Ashh”: How’s it goin baby sis?

I typed back a quick reply:

“School is school, why is there 6 hours of this!”

Putting my phone back in my pocket Calum walked up behind me with Michael. We all had the next class together. We meaning us and the mysterious Luke. The class was art, somehow I couldn’t imagine these boys willingly taking art but hey who am I to judge. The final bell rings and most of the class start to leave. Teacher, Mr. Robbins, lets us go at least 5 or 10 minutes early.  I started walking out of school when Calum caught up to me.

C: “You goin home?”

J: “Yeah why?”

C: Band practice why else?”

I stopped dead in my tracks.

J: “What band?”

C: “The band me, Ashton, Luke, and Calum are in. How did you not know about it?”

J: “Uh….I don’t know its Ashton’s thing”

So this was the band Ashton was in. Why did I never pay any attention to it! Now I feel stupid for well…..being stupid. Calum probably thinks I’m weird and where’s Michael? It seems like him and Calum are attached at the hip.

C:” So can I walk home with you?”

J: “Well you’re going there anyway so why not.”

I didn’t mean to sound rude, I was just a little shocked now that all these pieces were fitting together. About 5 minutes into the walk I realized I had to ask the question.

J: “So Luke?”

C:  “Luke? Our Luke?”

J: “Yeah that Luke.”

C: “Mr. Luke Hemmings. He’s 17, thinks he’s super cool all the time. He’s our main vocals and guitar. Why so interested?”

J: “Just curious. Where’s Michael?”

C:” Had to go pick up the one you’re so ‘curious’ about. There’s no way he’s missing practice.”

Once we were home I immediately went inside while Calum opened the garage and began setting up. Running all the way upstairs and into Ashton’s room, I find him eating cereal and watching cartoons.

He’s 20, wtf no he’s 7

He looks up from the TV and smiled.

“How was your first day?”

“You didn’t tell me Calum was in your band.”

“You never asked”

True, I didn’t

“And Michael.”

“Friend of Calum, kind of just fit.”

“And………Luke”

“I met him a while back. He and Michael aren’t the best of friends but they’re getting there. I mean if they can stand a car ride together they can stand anything.”

“Oh, Ok. Calum is here.”

“Oh right it’s 3:30” he said grabbing his drum sticks from under his pillow and dashing out of the room.

“Since you’re so interested now…..do you wanna watch practice?”

“This should be good”

A car pulled into the driveway and Michael got out along with who I could only assume was Luke.

“We’ll c’mon the guys are here”

By the time we got to the garage all the boys had set up and were just waiting for Ashton.

Ashton: “Well look who finally decided to show up!”

Luke:  “Sometimes I just don’t feel like waking up at 6am ok?” Luke said not looking up from where he was tuning his guitar.

C: “Whatever, he’s here now. Jaycee have a seat and prepare to be amazed.”

Luke finally looked up when he heard an unfamiliar name, my name. He didn’t’ mover or make and sound just stared. Calum noticed first, then Michael, and last Ashton.

A : “No.”

M : “No what?”

A: “That.” He pointed to ne and Luke “is not happening”

L: “Don’t even worry about it Ash.”

They started their set and I was actually surprised at how good they were. I excused myself like the proper “lady” my old school taught me. Luke laughed when I did this.

L: “Prep girl…..”

J: “Asshole.”

Just as I was inside our house I heard Ashton tell Luke “You date her, you date me. And I sure as hell don’t think you wanna do that.

And that was that.  Maybe it was the stare, the insult or the fact that Ashton practically forbid it.

Luke Hemmings, you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into.
