The last thing I can remember of him is how he always found a way to make me smile. Kai always knew somehow. I don't know how, he just always knew how to make me happy. The day we were separated was the gloomiest day I have seen. The rain never stopped that day. Mother was fighting with father. I never remember why, and when I ask mother, she quickly changes the subject. What I do remember is my Kai had woken up from his slumber hearing our parents shouting, and climbing into the top bunk of our bed with me to see if I was alright. I was awake, because I had never fallen asleep. I never knew how he managed to sleep through almost anything, including the fighting.
"Are you ok, Mari?" He asked me worriedly, noticing I may have never fallen asleep.
"Yeah Kai, I'm fine. I wonder what they are fighting about this time..." I responded gloomily.
Kai looked down for a moment, then said, "I'm going to look." With that, he jumped down from my bunk and crept on his silent feet to the dining room. I waited for at least ten minutes, satisfying my boredom with my favorite book. When he came back, he looked worried and sad.
"What's wrong? What did you hear?" I asked him quickly. I didn't want him to keep what he saw in his chest for too long. I brushed my fiery red hair from my eye and tucked it behind my ear to hear better.
"They were just arguing about dinner..." he said without meeting my eyes. He was kind, funny, and he always cared for me, but I could tell when he is lying.
I decided to drop it, since it seemed too sad for him to talk about. I saw a singe tear roll down his cheek, and but then my father came bursting in to our room shouting, "Come on Kai, pack your things and say goodbye to Mariana. We are leaving." My heart sank and I felt a sadness I had never felt in my life before. Was my brother really being ripped away from me? Was this why he lied? No, I thought looking over at him. He looks just as surprised and sad as I feel.
My mother then came bursting in and yelling at my father about not separating us, but I could hardly focus on what she said. My brother was leaving. I then realized that there were many tears rolling down my cheek, and I just let the waterfall pour, since I knew there was no stopping it. I saw mother's pointed elf ears start to show, and through hiccups and sobbing I said "Mom, your ears...." her eyes widened and she looked quickly to the window and I saw her ears materialize out of existence for the hundredth time. I looked at Kai, and with a disbelieving cry, hugged him harder than I have ever before. Please don't leave me....
