❝Do you remember AP History, senior year? You know—it was all about the wars; the fighting; the violent protests out in the streets. All in the name of freedom. The Shadow World is no different, really. History—no matter what realm—has always proven that the fight for freedom is a bloodsport, and there will always be casualties in one way or another. We all pay a price to be freed, Clary. I just wish that your trust hadn't been mine.❞

Hana Kim had always been mysteriously both knowable and unknowable. Yes, her scathing honesty—to the point where it seemed as if it was in her blood—always made it known what she was thinking and feeling at the time. However, there was always something more to her, something that snide remarks just didn't communicate. Something strange and alluring and captivating in the way she spoke; the grace with which she carried herself; the way her deep, piercing eyes were always alert, always knowing, as if she was seeing something that you didn't. As if she was anticipating something that you could never even dream of—a threat, a challenge, an unknown. Like there was more to her than what met the eye.
Her friends, Clary Fray and Simon Lewis, had come to accept her oddity as just part of who she was. When Hana first transferred into their school during senior year, they had no intention of befriending the beautiful, charmingly clueless, Korean transfer student. Having kept a pretty low profile all throughout high school, the duo had never expected someone as stunning and charismatic as her to talk to them at all, much less introduce herself with a shy smile and ask if she could sit with them. 'Wow,' Hana had said, pointing at their work-in-progress graphic novel in the library one afternoon, 'that looks super realistic. Can I sit?'
The rest, as they say, was history. Despite Clary and Simon's longstanding friendship, Hana managed to weave her way into their inseparable duo and make a space for herself. It was so perfectly mundane—they were just a trio of best friends, ones who hung out at each other's houses; lazed around at cafes; and simultaneously comforted one another and teased each other at every opportunity.
Until one night—the night of Clary's 18th birthday—when one encounter at a nightclub changes everything, revealing every bloodstained secret Hana had spent the past year running from.
