Chapter 1

-2 Years Later-

♡ Alyssa’s POV ♡

“What’s on your mind babe?” Luke whispered in my ear from beside me. I looked up from his chest, into his gorgeous ocean blue eyes, his short brown curls set on top of his head and I couldn’t help myself but compare him to Harry, just like I did with everyone else. It wasn’t intentional; it just ended up being that way.

Harry and I broke up two years ago when I had to move from Homes Chapel with my mom, Elizabeth. She’d finally divorced her good-for-nothing alcoholic husband and wanted nothing to do with that place anymore. But, moving here wasn’t a better choice. She’s been diagnosed with clinical depression. She doesn’t talk to me or anyone for that matter, she barely makes eye contact. All our conversations wouldn’t actually be considered conversations, more like one word answers.

Harry and I on the other hand had no contact what-so-ever. We ended it on good terms, or at least that’s what I think. I knew he wouldn’t be able to keep up with committing to someone he wasn’t able to be around with and I didn’t want to force him. He had asked to stay friends, but I couldn’t… I was in love with him and being constantly reminded that we were once together would just hurt. After I moved here, I got a new phone and new number so nobody could talk to me and remind me of anything, and gladly, it sort of worked. I don’t think of Harry all that much, although since he was so good to me, I do compare him to other people. Nothing wrong with it, right?

I met Luke a year and a half ago at a café down from our apartment, mine and my mother’s. I wasn’t interested in him at all, though I thought he had natural charm. I needed friends and he was the first person I met here. We hung out a lot, and somewhere in between our laughter, late night talks, and Friday night movies, we started liking each other quite immensely. He’s an incredible guy. He makes me happy by just his smile, and he treats me like a princess. Isn’t that what all girls want?

“Absolutely nothing”, I smiled, and a similar smirk appeared on his face. He leaned down and pecked me on the lips lightly, when my phone rang from the back pocket of my jeans. I pulled back, sitting up straight on the picnic blanket that we lay upon. Luke groaned slightly and I playfully smacked his arm answering the phone.

“Hello?”

“Hi. Is this… Alyssa Blake?” someone, a woman, asked from the other end.

“Err, yeah. Who’s this?”

“Alyssa dear, I’m speaking from The Wellington Hospital. Your mother Elizabeth got into a car accident a couple minutes ago”, she stated.

“What…” I replied, the words soaking in as she spoke. This couldn’t be true. How could she get into an accident, she was fine when we left the house this morning.

“Alyssa?” I heard Luke say from behind me. “Alyssa what happened? Who is it?”

The lump in my throat wouldn’t allow me to answer his questions and my body was frozen, like it had suddenly been paralyzed. He gently took the phone from my ear and started talking to the woman on the line. I can’t believe this is happening. She’s all I got. She can’t leave me alone like this. Suddenly, Luke grabbed me from my shoulders and shook me. I could see his mouth moving, trying to get me to talk or even move a little, but my body wouldn’t cooperate. My eyes glazed with tears and everything was becoming blurry when he grabbed me from wrists and stood me up. He picked me up bridal style and ran towards his car and I clutched his blue shirt tightly in my hand and cried into his chest.
