Bounding down the stairs, and missing the last two steps, I arrived in front of the door. Rachel's shadow was only visible a tiny bit because of the fogged up window. Her shadow swayed side to side slowly, she does this all the time when she's nervous. My hand stretched out to the door handle slowly, I didn't know what I expected to happen now and I definitely didn't know what I was going to say either. I pulled the door open and watched a soggy Rachel, heave herself through the door. She turned to me and looked into my eyes, gave me an apologetic look, and before I could say anything, she shook herself as much as she could. The droplets of water splashed all over me, causing my already-messed-up-mascara to run. Taking one look at each other, and at how much of a mess we both looked, we burst into a fit of laughter and fell into each other's arms.
"I am truly sorry Megs, not about getting you soaked through, but everything else." She said through deep breaths, trying her best not to laugh. I just nodded at her and tried to hold back my tears of laughter. I was so glad to have her back.
Pulling away from each other after a few minutes, we walked into the living room and sat on the couch. There was a bowl, filled to the top, of peanuts in the middle of the table. Rachel, like usual, took the whole bowl, put it on her lap, helping herself. I just laughed and shook my head at her, she shrugged and smirked at me as if to say What? Am I not aloud to eat either? She put one more handful of peanuts into her mouth and swung her legs onto the couch, to sit with her legs crossed, and faced me, studying my eyes carefully.
"So?" She said, still studying my eyes.
"So what?" I asked, trying to avoid direct eye contact with her. Making direct eye contact made me feel a bit uncomfortable, I don't know why exactly, it just did.
"So, James. You know, any news. What's the goss?" She said smirking at me. I rolled my eyes and pulled my tongue out at her, yes this was childish, but it's me and I'm childish.
"Well I thought he'd fallen out with me because he seemed really sad that I hadn't been texting him. But that was just because I didn't tell him I had my phone taken off me, because you know, I can't talk to his face. So I wrote him a note saying that I was sorry and then I told him about me having my phone taken off me and that I was sorry again. And then I gave it to him, then I got my phone back, he texted saying he forgave me and then he thought I was ignoring him again because he forgot I still had it taken off me. But now I have it back." I said whilst grabbing my phone and waving it around for Rachel to see.
"Yes I know you have it back Megs, I was texting you, remember? And you didn't have to speak that fast, I only just understood what you were saying." She laughed at me, turned away and then turned her head straight back and looked directly at me again.
"Wait, did you say he'd texted you again? Megs! What are you doing just sitting there, text him for God's sake! I'll go order the food whilst your at it, what do you want? Pizza?"
I nodded at her quickly, I don't need to tell her what kind I want, she knows me too well. Hawaiian pizza is my favourite, Pepperoni is hers and James's as well, he adores pizza. I watched her scurry off into the kitchen as I grabbed my phone off the cushion. I unlocked my phone and scrolled to the BBM icon, and then clicked mine and James's chat. The text with Best Friend in it, caught my eye again. I'll just try to ignore it, try to show I'm not bothered. I'm pretty good at hiding my feelings anyway, I'm not a touchy-feely kind of girl, I never have been and probably never will be. Deciding to keep the message simple, as to not show feelings, I just typed,
Hey ;) x
I placed my phone down on the table and stood up, about to go and turn the TV on when my phone made a loud buzzing noise on the table. Sitting back down on the couch, I picked up my phone.
Hey Meggy. Missed you so much. Glad you're back now xx
I sighed softly to myself, I bet I missed you more though. My eyes skimmed to the end of the text, two kisses this time. My heart skipped a beat, maybe this meant something. It couldn't though, could it? He already said I was his Best Friend, he obviously wants to be no more than that, and that is what I have to deal with.
I missed you more J xx
I only put two kisses as well because he did, not because I'm desperate, only because he put it. My eyes darted to the corner of the room as Rachel walked in,
"What's happening then? Any news off him."
Before I could reply, my phones vibrated on the table again. Snatching it off the table, before Rachel did, I quickly read the text.
Impossible xx
A smile emerged on my lips, he was too cute. Rachel must have sensed it was off him by my reaction and she raised her eyebrows at me, questioning me.
"What did he say?" Her eyes searching mine again, trying to read me. I'm like an open book anyway, you can basically always tell what I'm feeling. Most of the time.
"Nothing." I said, I didn't want to tell her about all of our texts and that we text all the time. She wasn't there when it happened because we fell out, therefore she still doesn't know about our friendship and bonding. I intend to keep it that way as well. Rachel made a Hmm sound, as she obviously didn't believe me, she looked at the clock then back to me.
"Our pizzas will be here in about 20 minutes. Let's just watch some TV until then."
I nodded at her, she winked at me and then went and turned the TV on and sat down next to me. I picked up my phone and turned the screen away from her so she couldn't see the screen. I glanced at her quickly, she was flicking through the channels anyway, she hadn't noticed I was on my phone. Clicking the BBM icon, I went to mine and James's chat again and re-read the last message he sent. He would have seen the little R now over the tick which meant it had sent and I'd read it, I had nothing to say to him now though. This is the best thing about us texting each other. We may stop texting for a while, maybe even a couple of hours, but we will always have our phones by our sides, and if either of us texts the other, we will reply straight away, no matter how long ago we sent our last texts.
