BENSON
It's been a week now since I took Mystique to dinner that night after her work and when trying to ask her out again, she stopped me and said no.
I don't know why it bothered me but it did more than I thought it would. Normally I wouldn't care but for some reason, I did this time.
However, I thought the best thing would be to avoid talking to her as much so that I didn't make her feel too awkward. What's easy about that is that she is finally done tutoring my brother and this way I was able to focus more on work and other things like Mordecai and what I was going to do in handling the situation.
Tonight though, after me and Max finished working and headed home, while on the way, we stopped by some drive thru to grab something to eat when I abruptly came to a complete stop as soon as I saw Kent talking to a few guys who looked like they would be in a gang or something. Then I looked a little closer and recognized one of the kids. It was Mordecai's nephew who next throws a punch at Kent.
"Oh shit." Max says. "Don't do it bro." He tells me.
I quickly unbuckle myself and jump out of the truck then sprint up to them and start to pull that little fucker off my little brother.
"Get the fuck off of him!" I yell out as I throw him off of Kent.
"What the fuck bro?!" The kids says.
Before he does anything else, they all look at me in fear.
"Oh shit. Is it really you Benson?" Mordecai's nephew asks.
"Yeah! Now get the hell out of here and stay the fuck away from my brother or else!" I threaten them.
"But he...." One of the other guys say.
"I said get the hell out of here!" I snapped at them again with balled up fists and while taking a step forward towards them but stopped as soon as they started to turn around and run away.
"What the hell Benson?!" I hear Kent from behind me stand up and turn me around by the shoulder with a bloodied nose.
"You don't get to say shit! Now get your ass in the truck, NOW!" I tell him through clenched teeth.
"I'm not a little kid anymore. I'm eighteen and you aren't dad, so why don't you not do the whole thing of you pretending you give a shit alright?!" He snaps back at me.
"GET. IN. THE. TRUCK. NOW!" I repeat through clenched teeth again and then grabbed him by his collar while pulling him towards the truck and push him inside before heading back to the house.
The moment we step inside, Max heads straight towards the living room and leaves me and Kent in the kitchen to talk to one another.
"What the hell is your problem Benson?!" Kent scowls at me with his arms crossed over his chest.
"No, you don't get to scowl at me and be all pissed off! You need to tell me what the hell that was all about and I swear to god if you lie to me!" I tell him.
"What do you care?! Like I told you before, you don't get to play the role of dad! You left and like it or not, this is MY business, NOT yours! Plus, you're in no position to be judging me when you were Mordecai's right hand men not too long ago!" He yells at me.
"Yeah but I changed after I went to prison when I tried covering for him! This guy is nothing but bad news and will get you nowhere but prison. I was lucky to get out with my life and my body parts still in tact. You may not be so lucky and I REFUSE to let you work for him!" I tell him.
"You don't know how hard it is. You don't know what it's like trying to live up to your reputation around here. I hated being your shadow and always being compared to you rather it was by the teachers, or anyone else around here that know me as your little brother and not as my own fucking person, Kent." He confesses.
I feel taken aback a little bit at what he just said because I hadn't realized it was ever like that for him. I didn't think it would be that hard for him, especially since mom left all her life insurance money to him that would leave him living comfortably for a long time.
He's right in a way though, I haven't been the best example for him and was never the older brother he deserved.
"You're right." I tell him in a calmer voice.
"Fuck it, I can't take this shit anymore." We hear Max say as he turns off the TV and stomps towards us while looking at Kent.
"Max...." I try and stop him.
"No, he needs to hear this. Ever since you were little, you were always your parents favorite. Do you know why your mother kicked him out? Because she caught him selling drugs and illegal weapons to bad people. It was the only way he was able to make enough money to keep you both afloat since your mom wasn't bringing in enough money. Now I'm not saying that it was the right choice, but it was the only available one at the time. Then the day came when he tried to leave the gang but Mordecai threatened to kill both you and your mother. So he did that last job that Mordecai set him up for to take the blame and be sent to prison for. So don't be standing here talking about how hard your life has been. You aren't the only one who suffered. So stop your bitching and grow the fuck up since you take pride in how much of an adult you are!" He finishes.
I chose not to say anything as I didn't want him to become more upset.
"I...." Kent began.
"I don't give a shit in what you have to say right now to be honest. I'm going to order some wings and pizza then relax." Max says to us before starting to order some food.
Next chapter will be posted soon! :)
