I walked around the fair, with Louis feeling uneasy. The only reason that made sense to me, was that he was trying to make me jealous. But it didn't seem logical, because he was clueless about Harry and I.
"So tell me about Gabrielle." I say, looking up at Louis.
He smiled slightly, still looking at the grass path we were walking along, beside the rides.
"Well, she's incredible. Gorgeous, has an amazing personality, and just is perfect."
I smile and nod, pretending to care.
"What have you been up to for the last year?" he asks, finally looking at me.
I shrug. "Just keeping up with school. Nothing exciting."
"I see."
"How about you?"
“Working on new stuff for our album.” He says. “It’s been fun though!”
I smile.
Guilt flashed through me all of a sudden. Louis was being totally honest with me, telling me everything. I on the other hand, lied to him. And I told Harry to lie too. He believed everything I told him was the truth, and that made me worried. Maybe he was trying to make me jealous. Or maybe he already knew about Harry and I.
Louis stopped walking, looking at a game booth. He grinned at me.
“Want me to try?” he asked.
“Sure. Good luck.” I smirked, watching him throw baseballs at glass bottles. Surprisingly, he broke them all and selected a small bear.
“Here.” He says, handing me the bear.
“You don’t have to, Louis.” I insist.
“No, really.” He says, setting it in my hands.
“Thanks.”
I hold the bear up to me cheek, the soft fur running against my skin.
“Hey, do you want to get something to eat?” Louis asked.
“Sure.”
We walked over to a Hamburger stand, and ordered fries with it. We walked over to a picnic table, and sat down.
“Rachel, I have a confession.” He says, looking at me seriously.
“What?”
“Well-“
My phone rang, and I answered the unknown number.
“Hello?”
“Hi. This is Riverview hospital in London. Alexa Anderson is here in critical condition, due to a drunk driver hitting her head on. Some of her records say we should call you. I’m so sorry.”
I dropped my phone to the ground, absolutely stunned. Tears formed on the edge of my eyes.
“Rachel? What’s wrong?”
“Alexa was in an accident. She’s in critical condition-“ I choked out, tears streaming down my face.
“We need to go.” He said, leading me back over to his car.
I ran after him, wiping my face with my sleeve. We hopped in the car, speeding off to the hospital.
The world just blurred together. Why was this happening? I was losing everyone I loved. No matter what I did, whether it was right or wrong, anything backfired on me. Unexpectedly too.
The land beside us was a blur, passing us in a matter of seconds. I was determined right now. I wasn’t going to lose Alexa. Even if it meant sacrificing part of me to do it. Nothing was going to stand in my way. Not this time.
“We’re almost there.” Louis said, taking my hand.
“I just can’t. I can’t lose her, Lou.” I cried.
“You won’t lose her Rachel. I promise.”
I sighed shakily, wiping the tears away under my eyes.
We pulled into the Emergency parking lot, and I ran out of the car and into the Emergency room. The lighting was almost blinding from being outside all day. The receptionist was typing away at her computer, looking up at me.
“Can I help you?”
“Alexa Anderson.” I said, trying to hold myself together.
“Room 320.” She said, not giving me a sympathetic look or anything comforting.
I ran to the nearest elevator, impatiently pressing the up arrow numerous times. A hand rested on my shoulder, and I turned around to see Louis giving me a small smile. I wrapped my arms around him, crying in his shoulder.
“It’s going to be alright.” He said, sniffling.
I looked up to him, a tears falling down his cheek.
The elevator opened, and we rushed inside, and I started to pound the Level 3 button.
“Rachel.” Louis said, gently grabbing my hand. “It won’t go any faster of you do that.”
I nodded, resting my head on his shoulder.
The doors opened, and I tore down the hallway, not bothering to wait for Louis. I frantically searched for Alexa’s room, running down the hall like a mad person.
320.
I stopped, and got myself together. I walked into the room, horrified.
Liam, Harry, Niall, Zayn, and Ari all sat around the room with tearstained faces, Liam had his head in his hands, crying I assume.
“Oh my god.” I whisper, tears coming out faster now.
Alexa was unconscious, hooked up to numerous machines, scratches and bruises covering her body, along with blood stains everywhere.
Harry stood up, embracing me in a hug. I buried my head into his shoulder.
“Why God?” I said angrily.
Harry rubbed my back, not comforting me in any way.
I pulled away from him, and I walked over to Liam, sitting next to him. I hugged him lightly, rubbing my hand up and down his arm.
“I don’t understand.” He whimpered. “Why would God do this to her?”
“I don’t know. I honestly don’t know.” I admitted.
“God damn it.” He said, hitting the wall.
I was shocked. Liam never swore. But, who could blame him?
“What even happened?” I asked reluctantly.
“Some bastard hit her. He was fucked up and now look what he did! What did she do to deserve this?”
“Nothing. Nothing at all.”
We cried together, blocking out everything else about the world.
Zayn, Niall, and Ari left at about 11:00, leaving Harry, Louis, Liam and I.
“I need some air.” I say, walking out of the room. Footsteps hurried behind me. I turned around to see Harry.
“I thought you might need some company.” He said, swinging his around my shoulder.
“I’m fine.” I snapped.
He looked tired and upset, which made two of us.
“I don’t know why this happened.” Harry said.
“Neither do any of us.”
“Just know I’m here for you.” He says.
I looked at him and smiled. He kissed me passionately, and someone sneezed behind us.
It was Louis, a hurt expression on his face.
