Chapter 11
Date: March 15th
Location: Guardian Base
Time: 9:31 a.m.
“This is a stupid plan,” My father told me as I flitted around my room packing all the necessary items.
“Well I don’t seem to have any other,”
Shirt, shirt, underwear, socks, pants, gun, toothpaste.
“Is it even safe?” He prodded as I made sure that I had extra bullets just in case.
No, hardly anything I ever did was deemed safe anymore. I just did what I thought had a good chance of panning out. It wasn’t always the smartest plan or the wisest, but it had worked for me.
“Yes dad,” I chose to lie to him instead, knowing that would soothe some of his fears.
“Richard Caldwell is a dangerous man,” He reminded me.
“Weren’t you two good friends?”
A long time ago Richard Caldwell was on the side of my family and was a part of the Guardians and worked with helping take out the bad guys by bending some rules. He wanted to create his own company and disregard the law completely to take out those who had done wrong. Somewhere in that process his business, Lockstar, became one of the largest human trafficking businesses in the world. I’m still not fully sure what happened there.
“Doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s still dangerous,”
Richard Caldwell, while older, is still the King of the criminal world and most people followed his every command without hesitation. While Lockstar didn’t go his original way, it gave him fear and respect. Very few people, like the Reapers didn’t care.
What my family didn’t know is that when I went to face Levi, I knew I wasn’t going to live, no matter what I said. There was no happy ending for me. What my family and friends also didn’t know is that when I visited Caldwell I told him I constructed a plan for my men to steal Levi away and lock him up in chaos. In return for Levi’s protection and survival I asked Caldwell to give my friends and family safety.
I still don’t know how it was all pulled off, but I knew Caldwell was a bit peeved at my men being able to sneak Levi away. Currently the bastard was locked in a secure location that only me and three other men knew of.
Because of all of this Caldwell and I had an uneasy alliance while I was still “alive” and he thankfully kept his word after I had “died” by protecting everyone I cared about. He supposedly gave them coins, claiming that they were from me, that the others should carry around. If anyone does get into trouble because the criminals don’t know who they are, by showing them the coin any smart criminal would tuck tail and run.
“I’ll be careful,” I reassured my father for the millionth time as I closed my suitcase.
“At least take some back up,”
I knew arguing wouldn’t get me anywhere as the Carter stubbornness ran throughout our entire family. My father was probably the most stubborn, even more so than me. So that’s how I eventually ended up on a private plan with Matt as my plus one. While he wasn’t the best fighter compared to Iris or John, I knew he’d be quick to think on his feet and always had my back.
“So where’s our adventure taking us?” Matt finally asked when the plane took off.
When I asked him to come with me on an important assignment to speak with Caldwell he didn’t even question it, he even already had a bag pre-packed. He didn’t question anything I told him to do and didn’t even make a peep when I said that he couldn’t tell anyone about this. He just kept a grin plastered to his face and was bouncing up and down like a little boy.
