"Tobias!" I yell down at the field from the bleachers, waving my hand in the air like a maniac. "Tobias! Here! To the right! Right, not left!"

He finally catches sight of me and waves. Wiping his neck with a towel, he jogs up the cement steps, huffing.

"Hey man." He bends and catches his breath, then shakes his head. Drops of sweat go flying everywhere.

"Gross." I comment, watching one land on Meera's face. She vigorously wipes it off and scowls at Tobias.

"Sorry." he says. "Tyler's been making us practice like crazy. The dude made us do 20 laps first thing in the morning. In the morning. And he did at least thirty on his own."

"Oh wow." Meera says. "I would fall and die in the first lap itself."

"Something's wrong with him. He's got too much energy. Like, more than he usually does on the field." Then he leans closer to me and covers his mouth, "You don't think he's on steroids, right?"

I laugh so loud he looks alarmed.

"Steroids? Tyler Beckett? He's too pure for that." Meera gives me the side eye. I discreetly flip her off.

"Yaro!" Tyler yells from the field. He's standing near the flagpost, his hand shielding his eyes from the sun, and when Tobias turns to go back down, he gives me a look so searing I nearly faint.

We haven't spoken much in the past week, with the soccer season coming to an end before reopening in February. He has practice both before and after school, and added to that is the mountain of homework all the teachers are piling onto us.

"Why do boys look so good in their football jerseys?" Meera says, chewing on a spoonful of lemon rice.

"Tell me about it."

"You know, I didn't find Jack good-looking in the beginning, but then one day he made a really bad pun and all of a sudden he was the hottest guy I knew."

"Wow." I say. "So you guys dating or what?"

"No, no." She twirls her spoon in the air. A grain of rice is stuck to it. "Just friends."

"Mhmm." I say, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, shut up." She shoves my arm lightly. "You're one to speak. Don't act like I haven't noticed you and Tyler."
