As soon as I shut my bedroom door, I tossed my purse against the side of the bed and made my way to the balcony. I pulled the curtain to the side and peeked out. Mr. Blackley and Jamie were lifting the lawnmower from the back of the truck.
Just as they gently placed the machine on the ground, Jamie’s head turned slightly. Quickly, I closed the curtain and took a step away. There was no way I could let him catch me staring.
Soon after, the sound of the lawnmower started. I assumed it would be safe to look back out. Before I was able to pull back the curtain, there was a little knock coming from the glass door.
Shocked, I blinked several times before slowly pulling the fabric back. I just knew Jamie would be standing there. Instead, there was a tiny, blue sticky note stuck against the glass.
My eyes scanned the porch before I slid the door open and grabbed the note. The words were sharp and large, “What’s in the backyard?”
I stared at the print before taking off towards the kitchen to the back door. “What the-” I whispered to myself, looking out the window. Nothing about the backyard looked different. It was just the pool, lawn chairs, and a grill.
My hand gripped the knob and I slowly pulled the door opened. A cool breeze entered the house as I took a step outside. Even with a closer view, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Rolling my eyes slightly, I turned. Without warning, a burst of cold liquid hit the side of my body causing my mouth to drop. A tiny shrieked escaped my lips as I lifted my hands to block the water. The water died down giving me time to recover.
“What the heck!” I shouted, shaking the drips of water from my fingertips.
“You shouldn’t trust random notes on your door.” A sudden voice called out. The voice had a slight accent drawing my attention to it even more. My eyes traced up a tall, slender body holding a hose.
“What was that for?!” I asked, looking down at my body. “These are my work clothes.”
Jamie moved the water towards the grass. “You work at that little diner around the corner, don’t you?”
Gently, I wiped the smeared hair from my forehead. “Yeah, but what does that have to do with you getting me all wet.”
He turned and gave me a soft smile. “I seem to get a lot of girls wet.”
Sighing deeply, I opened the door ready to get as far away from him as possible. Once more there was a burst of cold water and it was getting in the house! I rushed inside and shut the door.
“You idiot!” I shouted through the door, and stormed off to my room.
