MIKE WHEELER WAS sitting in the basement of his house. This wouldn't have been surprising if you had seen him a couple years ago. Him and his party used to meet in Mike's basement regularly, silently deciding upon it being their official meeting spot. However, a lot can change in one summer and going into the basement was the last thing you'd except him to do after hearing the events that had went down last year. But here he was, lying on the couch like nothing had happened and reminiscing all over again.

Maybe reminiscing isn't the right word. It makes it seem like he was remembering all the happy memories when the truth is a vast contrast to that.

It was a dangerous thing for him to do. He usually didn't allow himself to think about it. To think about her. But with the start of school coming around he couldn't help but find his mind wandering back to how it all could've been different. The thoughts were always there, of course. Like a deep and painful scar plastered across his forehead, it would never go away. But there was too much going on in his life at the moment to worry about that he didn't have time to let himself succumb to the dark thoughts.

In reality, everything Mike had taken for granted, was slowing disappearing from his life. His parents' marriage was on the rocks with new fights everyday leaving an air of tension in the Wheeler home. His sister Nancy wasn't coping well with the loss of Barbara Holland and now having virtually no friends at school. Mike himself often sat alone at lunch, the party having disbanded months ago.

It had all happened rather quickly. First Will felt he needed space to recover from the traumatic events of the summer which had admittedly left all of them shaken. Then Dustin "didn't have time" to play D & D anymore. Finally Lucas had found himself a new girlfriend in the form of feisty, redheaded skateboarder Max and had much better things to do. And just like, that Mike's group of childhood friends disappeared in a heartbeat. Not to mention she had been gone for almost a year now.

He didn't think his life could get much worse.

"Michael! Are you in the basement sweety? It's been months since you last went down there... Anyways I heard at the pool today that Miss Hunt is starting her dance classes again and I've signed you up. It'll be good to get you out the house for once"

Never mind.
