It could be a real beauty, some form of modern art, were it not for all the slime, bones, and different compositions of matter in various stages of digestion.
I shut my eyes and breathe in deep, the sulphur tickling my senses and the chains making my skin itch. If I wasn't going to die before, I was without doubt going to die here either from starvation or from a gigantic creature eating me alive. Whichever gets to me first.
I had barely finished the thought when another growl echoed, right beside my feet.
Oh God.
I finally look down, and fight to swallow the bile rising in my throat. Throwing up two times is already two times too many. But this sight warrants me to repeat it all over again.
The skull of the creature strains against its dark, scaly and leathery skin. There were various gaps on its face, bright green light shining from somewhere within them. The eyes, I realise, were staring at me with a hunger I did not want to witness being unleashed, especially while being on the receiving end. The. . . thing grinned, cracked lips peeling back to reveal long pointed fangs that could rip me in half with one swipe from them.
It was frightening, a sight I forever wanted to erase from my mind. I attempt to step back, only to find myself immobile. I tried to lift my hand, only it didn't come into view, it was stuck in place.
Something I'd learned sometime in school came to mind: Males are tinier than females, and they do not attack for no reason at all, so this must have some eggs somewhere? Is that where I am? In a female spider's nest?
Oh my God.
I swallow another round of vomit, the putrid smell not helping in the least. Something died here- I just know it.
The creature raises a rough, scaly hand, and a jagged claw strokes my neck at the place where the gargoyle had bitten on. I hiss from the pain and its arid, hot breath stings a scratch on my cheek.
I was as helpless as David going against Goliath, only it wouldn't be the giant going down this time. I swallow a sob and close my eyes, not wanting the creature to be the last thing I see before dying. The green light flashes again, blinding me momentarily and I feel grateful for the reprieve. But a second later the light passes and my eyes open again. I don't why; it's a reflex, I don't actually want to see what's happening to me, but at the same time, curiosity peeks out and tells me to look. So I look, and I regret it, uselessly wishing it was dark again.
I look at the monster and I could almost swear it mouthed the words, "Goodbye, princess."
I'm whimpering when I wake up. Shivering although my sheets are drenched in sweat, and my tears feel cool against my skin. I didn't understand why now I cried, I'd almost been dinner, twice, and never once did I shed a tear. Maybe it was relief, maybe I was just glad that I didn't end up being a meal.
Or maybe I was crying because I knew this was only the beginning. There'd be more nightmares; there'd be more pain. Didn't I tell you?
This was only just the beginning.
