Something stirs me awake.
Sera.
Sera, it says, a sharp sting on my cheek soon following.
"Hey! Why'd you do that for?" Lilo's familiar voice filters into my senses and I blink, the bright light harsh against my eyes.
"We need to eat, that's why." Gabby replies, with a snark in her voice, and I can almost imagine the sneer that sits permanently on her face.
"You're so rude." Millie adds, backing up her sister, though that rarely happened.
Are they all here?
I open my eyes once more and Lilo proclaims my resurrection. "See? She's awake! You didn't have to slap her."
Gabby rolls her eyes. "If I didn't, she'd still be asleep."
"She-"
I cut off Millie before this turns into a full blown argument. "I'm okay, Lilo. Thanks."
"Oh, you're finally up!" She launches towards me and hugs me. I'm so taken aback that I don't do anything until she pulls away. Nobody hugs anybody in this house; not even amongst the twins.
She gives me a lopsided grin and pushes her glasses back up. "I was so worried, Sera. I didn't think you'd ever wake up!"
I give a small chuckle, that sounds weak, even to my own ears. "I'm okay, Lilo. Really."
She's not having it, though. Somehow, her already wide eyes widen even farther as she continues her rant. "No, you were out for like hours, and we were all worried -even Uncle Howard, because he can't cook; mum can't cook, Alex said he doesn't want to, and you know how Gabby is."
Uncle Howard? Who in the world is that?
I try to arrange my jumbled thoughts but my head hurts so much, I don't try harder.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Gabby demands, her sneer more prominent, now that she's been provoked.
Millie backs up Lilo once more and I wonder which alternate universe we're living in.
"You know what she means; Sera cooks for us, Alex drives all of us -including you- and all you do is just sit around and mope about how hard life is!"
Her wild hair swings about her and she pushes her glasses further up her nose, as if proving a point- just as Lilo usually does. Nobody would believe they're twins, but they're so alike, it's hard to ignore.
Gabby glares at me as if this is my fault and walks out the door, her nose high. Although this is her room too and if she wants to sleep, she'll have to get back in here, she doesn't once look back.
Millie sticks out her tongue at her retreating back, but then quickly turns back to me. "Seriously, though, we thought you were done for, for a moment there."
Lilo nods, her short hair bobbing with her. "Yeah. Oh, and Uncle Howard told us to give you this when you wake up. He said it'll help with your head." She hands me a bottle of prescription medicine, still talking. "I think you bumped it or something when you fainted."
I frown and look at the bottle for a moment, not sure why I feel like something is wrong- very, very wrong.
"Oh and also, would you mind coming down and cooking the moment you feel like you can? We have school tomorrow and it's almost nine o'clock."
They should've eaten hours ago!
"Nine o'clock? How?" I ask , still staring at the pills, something inside me telling me I probably shouldn't take them."Because Uncle Howard-"
Her words drown out as images fill my head. A knife, some blood -so much blood, and bright green eyes on the face of my dear Uncle Howard.
"Listen," I start, whispering, while looking around as if he might spring out of somewhere and kill me.
"We need to get him out of here, and quick, okay?"
"Do you mean Uncle-"
I shush her. "Do you want him to hear you?!"
She looks at me with this look that I'm sure I've given her time to time again. Like I've done something wrong and she has decided to let me off, out of the goodwill of her heart
"Sera. Let me tell you again, Uncle Howard isn't here to hurt us, that was just mum overreacting. He's here to help us."
Goodness gracious; she sounds delusional.
"Could you stop calling him Uncle Howard! He's not our uncle and his name is not even Howard!"
She continues giving me that look. "Oh? Then what's his name?"
"Poe!" I shout and then look around again. "His name is Poe, and I saw him-" I close my eyes, recalling the dream.
