Adelaide shot up from her bed dramatically and threw off the covers, frantically running around to find her outfit. Of course, she had slept in. It was twenty minutes until she had to meet Brodie in the cafe across the street and she didn't have time to curl her hair like Kellie had told her to, or to eat or to style up her outfit with jewelry! Adelaide pulled on her khaki green jeans and her black tight-fitted t-shirt. She threw her black leather jacket over her arm and grabbed her floral purse, she paused infront of the mirror to smooth out her baby hairs and tucked each loose strand behind her ears.
"Why do I always do this" she cursed herself as she ran out the front door locking it behind her. Maybe it was a good thing she was in such a rush, she didn't have time to think about how nervous she was.Realizing how cold it was, Adelaide put on her black leather jacket and wrapped it tightly around her body to keep in the heat, she didn't think about the weather conditions when picking out this outfit but yet she wasn't purposefully trying to impress Brodie, at least, she thought so. Adelaide was edging closer to the cafe and she could feel the butterflies in her stomach.
"What will I say to him? What if he isn't there? Do I hug him when I see him?" She frantically thought of all the things that could go wrong. Adelaide took a deep breath as she walked up to "Cafe Sol" and opened the door. A blast of warm air and the smell of roasted coffee beans hit her as she walked in. Adelaide quickly scanned the cafe looking for Brodie and she spotted him sitting at the stools over by the window. She slowly walked over to him almost tip-toeing over. He was wearing a green slogan t-shirt and black jeans, a black denim jacket was flung over the back of his chair. His hair was just as messy as it had been the day he dropped all of his books in the hall. He was engrossed in his phone, frantically texting someone."Brodie" Adelaide called out just as Brodie looked up from his phone. Brodie's frown quickly turned into a gleaming smile and he stood up to greet Adelaide.
"Hey! What's up?" He said enthusiastically whilst walking towards her. Brodie was about to hug her when he realized that would be weird. They both stood there, awkwardly close to each other.
"I'm good" Adelaide laughed, "how are you?" she gestured towards the stools and they both sat facing each other, knees touching.
"I'm good, for a minute there I was worried you weren't going to come!" He admitted.
Adelaide couldn't believe Brodie thought she was going to stand him up, "if anything I thought it was going to be the other way around" she joked.
"No I wouldn't do that."After ten minutes of small talk and getting to know basic things about one another such as "do you have any siblings?", Brodie and Adelaide ordered an Americano each. Brodie wanted to pay for Adelaide but she put up a fight, making a scene in the cafe.
"Don't you dare!" She yelled at him, grappling at the money in his hand. He laughed at how stubborn she was. When they both tried the coffee they simultaneously spat it back out.
"I have a confession..." Adelaide began.
"You hate coffee"
"Yes"
"Me too."Brodie started off the conversation, "So, if you were stuck on a dessert island what three things would you bring?"
"You ask the most random questions!" Adelaide exclaimed.
"Well if I didn't ask weird questions every conversation I have would be boring because I'm not very good at small talk."
"Yeh your right you stutter a lot" Adelaide teased. Brodie dipped his head in "shame" and they both laughed.
"Ok, if I was on a dessert island, stranded, I would bring...... sun cream because I burn easily!" Brodie furrowed his eyebrows, laughing at how cute the answer was.
"Umm, a first aid kit incase I get hurt and probably Oscar!"
"Oscar? Oscar in our class, what about Alaya and Kellie?"
"Fair point. I only said Oscar because he watches all the survival shows and he'd probably know what to do."
"Fair enough, I'd probably bring him too."
The conversations were endless and it wasn't once awkward, Brodie was the most easy going guy she had ever met."Do you miss Australia?" She questioned, in an attempt to start a deep conversation.
"Yeh, a lot actually."
"What do you miss about it?"
"My friends, my family, the culture. I guess I miss the weather too. I miss being able to go to the beach after school and just sitting there, watching the surfers."
"It sounds incredible" she replied.
"It is."Worried that Adelaide had put a downer on the conversation she was about to comment on Ms Smith's weird fashion sense when Brodie asked,
"So, Lachlan?" Oh god, Adelaide had been dreading that question.
"Oh yeh, um that's a really long story."
He continued to look at her and remained silent. He wanted her to say something but he wasn't going to force it out of Adelaide.
"He was my ex, is my ex"
"Oh! Sorry, I didn't.." he stuttered over his words, obviously nervous.
"No it's alright" she reassured him sweetly."He had no right to attack you like that" Brodie said defensively. Adelaide felt the butterflies in her stomach again, excited at the fact he was being defensive over her.
"He didn't really attack me, we had an argument before you walked in anyways. He's an asshole. I'm just trying to avoid him" she explained to Brodie. The two could've stayed there for ages getting to know each other, but it was already 3 o'clock. Grabbing their things they both left the cafe together, Brodie held open the door for Adelaide. She quickly checked her phone, there was a missed call from Oscar. Is he ok?
"What way are you walking?" Brodie asked. Adelaide looked up from her phone immediately, she was distracted by the missed call but would answer it later.
"This way" Adelaide replied pointing in the direction of her house. Brodie was walking the same way. The sun had finally come out and their walk back was calm, their conversation flowed with such ease. Adelaide had really enjoyed the day.
"Hey, is that Alaya and Mr.Harris over there?" Brodie questioned, confused.
"What!? Where?" To Adelaide's horror, Brodie pointed them out, sitting on a park bench at the end of the street.
