"Eddie," his mother was calling out. "Eddie, get over here!"

The brunette groaned and sat up from his bed. He hissed and held his bruised hip, sighing. The day before was horrendous, but today was Saturday, and he could go shopping. The money was in his wallet, in his backpack, and Sonia was yelling for him.

"Edward! Get. Up!"

Eddie groaned more loudly and stood. It was cold, so he took his blanket with him and rubbed his eyes while yawning. He walked into the kitchen to see his mother glaring at him.

"Yes?"

"I'm going out today," she started. "So you better have this house cleaned before I get back."

"When?"

"I'm coming back tonight. Don't do anything stupid, Eddie."

"Can I have some money?" Eddie tried hard not to have an attitude at his mother for being starved.

"Oh, Eddie. I gave you some last week-"

"That was for lunch. I'm all out." He sighed. "I haven't eaten for a while. Can I just have a five?"

Sonia reluctantly placed a five dollar bill on the island, in Eddie's direction. She coldly looked at him.

"Don't make me regret leaving you alone."

Please, woman. You leave me alone all the time because Dad isn't here.

"And by the way, your father called earlier."

Eddie's head perked up, and he looked at his mom expectantly. He always wished his dad had taken him when his parents got divorced. His father, Frank, had moved to Massachusetts. Eddie never really got calls from him, but when he did...well, he didn't know. The last time Frank called him was at New Year's.

"Uh, what'd he say?"

"He wants you to know that you have a brother."

Ouch.

"I-I what?" Eddie's heart hurt. "He has a new family?"

Sonia rolled her eyes and scoffed. "He's engaged, Edward." Her hands nervously tousled her purse. "Your father never took care of you anyway, no need to get hurt."

"But-" as if on cue, the telephone had started to ring by the fridge. Eddie immediately put the phone to his ear, despite his mother saying not to answer. He felt tears prick his eyes when his father's voice came through. "Hello? Anyone there?"

"K-Kaspbrak residence."

"Hello, can I speak to Edward?"

"This is he," Eddie smiled. His father had called for him. "Hi, dad."

"Oh, hey, son," Frank sounded like he was in a hurry. "Just wanted to let you know that, um... I'm moving to California soon. Wanted to say bye before my big trip. I've gotta new, uh, fiancee. Good news too! I, um, have a kid, Eddie."

"Dad...could you take me with you?" The brunette whispered.

"I can't, son." Frank's voice was so calming to hear for him. "That'd take too much time. Besides, what would your mother feel?"

"Wait, please. I-I wanna come with. I miss you." And I hate being here. Eddie let the tears flow down his cheeks.

"Sorry, Eddie. I've got to go. See ya, chap."

"Dad! Wait-" the line went dead. "I love you..."

Without Eddie noticing, Sonia slipped out of the door and left her son. He was crying and sniffling; his father didn't love him. He was abandoned. And his father was starting fresh, but he had to stay with his horrible mother.
