Jo continued to film the environment of Franklin Park while Hotch sorted everything out with Gideon about their possible suspect. Her phone rang, and she put down the camera, flipping open her phone and putting it to her ear.

"What's going on, Jenny?" She greeted.

"Our suspect is the guy who's playing the unsub, Scott McCarty. I just needed to let you know, just keep on going with the filming, we don't want him to get psyched out. Once you see the smoke bomb go off near the vehicle, get down." JJ said, Jo nodding and following her words, despite the fear that had begun filling her body. She pretended to keep filming until she saw the smoke in the corner of her eye, and dropped to the ground, quickly checking to see if Reid and Morgan had done the same, which, to her relief, they did.

Jo watched as the suspect got out of the car with his hands up, the SWAT team and the sergeant pointing their firearms at him. They got him to the ground, putting cuffs around his wrists. They pulled him to his feet, then Jo saw him go down, and heard many of the men yelling, all of them going to the ground. She understood what had happened and hid behind a tree, her heart hammering in her chest.

Their suspect had been shot.

Leaning her elbows on her knees and holding her face in her hands, Joey sat with the rest of her team in the police office. Everyone had been silent since they walked in, still trying to work through what had happened.

"How did McCarty end up playing the unsub?" JJ asked the detective, sitting down next to Jo.

"Chief Weigart punished McCarty for mouthing off during the profile briefing by making him the unsub and sticking him in a car all afternoon." She explained, Hotch nodding.

"Wait, then how could the unsub have found out about the reenactment?" Jo asked, picking her head up off her hands.

"Come on, cops talk. Pissed off cops talk loud." Morgan said, making Jo turn his direction and sigh. "At home, at the bars, at gyms, you name it. Anyone who would listen."

"What do we know?" The detective asked.

"Our unsub went from wounding civilians to executing a police officer, so he's escalated." Gideon said. "He's not sticking to his script."

"Sometimes it's what they don't do." Hotch said.

"He didn't pick McCarty at random." Reid looked up from his feet as he spoke.

"He didn't take the gun shot." Morgan added.

"Why?" Hotch asked. Joes mind clicked, and she sat up in her seat.

"He wants to tell the world that nobody can take credit for his work!" She exclaimed. Gideon smiled at her and nodded, and she practically glowed with pride.

"Yes, Ma'am. His ego just won't allow it." Gideon said. "He feels under-appreciated."

"Ok, but we still don't know why he wounds them." Elle said. Morgan's phone rang and he excused himself, leaving the room.

"We know if the killer has no contact with his victims, he will not contact the media."

"But he hasn't contacted the media." Said Elle.

"That means he has contact with his victims then, right?" Jo questioned, Hotch giving her a nod.

"There's only one way he could." He said. Morgan walked back into the office.

"Garcia nailed down the geographic profile. The crime scenes are centered on 2 separate locations."

"The hospitals." Hotch realized.
