A realization dawned on me.
The already difficult events that were unfolding seemed to be getting worse.
But I knew what I had to do.
I needed a change of scenery, somewhere far from all this turmoil.
And so, I made the decision to move to California.
With my group in tow, we would start fresh in a new place.
The recent death of Olivia Khan had taken a toll on all of us, and I also had some personal family matters that I could not share at the moment.
But California was our future.
I woke up from my bed with a newfound determination.
Quickly changing into a comfortable outfit, I applied some makeup and pulled my hair into a messy bun, leaving some stray "baby hairs" framing my face.
Heading downstairs, my excitable husky Biscuit greeted me with leaps and bound, almost knocking me over in his excitement.
Biscuit was more than just a pet - he was my emotional support through everything.
He had been with me since he was a small puppy, growing into the loyal and loving adult dog he is now.
As he showered me with kisses, I couldn't help but laugh as his wet nose tickled my face.
Finally managing to wriggle out of his embrace, I stood up and brushed off any lingering fur before continuing with my day.
I walked to my kitchen, feeling the weight of the decision I had made earlier that day pressing on my shoulders. I knew it was the right choice, but that didn't make it any easier. I grabbed my phone from the counter and stared at it for a moment, taking a deep breath before dialing Promise's number.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
"Hello?" Her voice was soft and comforting, a familiar sound that brought a wave of relief over me.
"Hey, it's Juliana."
"Hey, Juliana, what's up?" She sounded genuinely interested, which made me feel a little guilty for what I was about to ask her.
"I was wondering if you want to move to California with me?"
"California?" She sounded surprised, but not completely opposed.
"Yeah, Mackenzie and Gianna wanted me to stay with them since I am not safe here."
"Sure, I'll go with you," she said without hesitation. I let out a sigh of relief.
"Thanks, bb, I love you," I said, using our usual term of endearment.
"I love you too, but don't ever call me bb again or I will tell Jasper you are cheating on him with me," she joked, but I could hear the seriousness in her tone.
"Please don't. I pinky promised you," I said, feeling a tinge of guilt for making such a promise to her.
"Okay, fine. Call ends." I could tell she was smiling on the other end of the line.
I hung up the phone and let out a sigh. I knew this was the right choice, but I couldn't help feeling a twinge of sadness for what I was leaving behind. But I knew my safety and my future were more important. I grabbed my bag and headed out the door, ready to start a new chapter in California.
I had gathered my squad, a motley crew of misfits who somehow found a way to thrive in this small town, and they were all on board for my crazy plan. We were going to California, where the sun was always shining and the streets were paved with stardust.
Bingo! I thought, as I counted up the members of my group. With just one more person, our journey would be complete. We could leave this town behind and start anew, chasing our dreams in the land of opportunity.
I called up my last recruit, a quiet but fiercely determined individual who I knew would be the perfect addition to our makeshift family. After a moment of hesitation, they agreed to join us. Sweet, I thought, feeling a surge of excitement and anticipation.
As I hung up the phone, I couldn't help but feel like this was meant to be. The pieces were falling into place, and it was as if the universe was conspiring to make our dream a reality.
California, here we come. I smiled to myself, knowing that our journey was just beginning. We may have been a ragtag group of misfits, but we were ready to take on the world together. Nothing could stop us now.
We packed our bags, said goodbye to our loved ones, and hit the road. As we drove towards our new beginning, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the people by my side. No matter what the future held, I knew that with them, I could conquer anything.
And so we embarked on our journey, full of hope and promise.
