"Suzu," I called out, keeping the rifle pointed at Lino. He looked between me and her as she came out from the parked minivan.
"See, I told you we'd find your friend" he looked slightly nervous. The last thing he thought would be to find himself at the end of gun. He knew that I knew he lied to me.
"Show him your hand."
Suzu raised a shaky hand, revealing Lino's gang tattoo embedded into her flesh. She had mascara streaks running down her face and her hair was slightly knotted
"I did what I had to do, chula, we both did" he defended. Raising his hands in surrender after putting down his weapon.
There was a short silence but in that moment, I realized it didn't matter if he knew where she was all along. That didn't mean he was just going to hand her over to me even if I did know that bit of truth. Helping him kill Saucedo would have happened either way.
"Both eyes open." I said, throwing his own words back in his face.
The sound of gunshots fired off. Lino still stood there, eyes closed, waiting for the bullets that never reached him. I emptied the clip but not at him. He eyed me as I threw the rifle off to the side.
A black van pulled up behind me, revealing more of Lino's men. On the opposite side of the parking lot, police cars piled up, red and blue lights reflecting."Let's go chula!" Lino called out, waiting on my move. I looked at Suzu, I couldn't bring her with me. Lino would never let her go. And me, I just helped kill the chief of police, I couldn't turn myself in now.
"I'm sorry," I mouthed to her, tears building up.
Lino grabbed my wrist before we sprinted to the van. Bullets were flying back and forth. One of Lino's men shot off one last grenade then shut the sliding door. The sirens in the background soon faded, leaving us in silence. A few deep breaths as everybody's adrenaline was faltering.Within a few miles, I finally spoke.
"I want her returned back to her home. You or nobody else to bother her again." I stated, not even looking at him. He nodded, already knowing who I was referring to.
"And Poyo?"He asked. I couldn't tell him I left him there for dead. There wasn't much I could do anyways. He was apart of a Mexican drug cartel, he can't exactly check himself into an emergency room. And he was shot in the throat, he would have bled out before getting any help.
"Dead." I answered, finally looking at him. I noticed outside his window that we were pulling up to a small jet. He made eye contact with me as he placed a hand on my knee
"Where are we going?" I asked alarmed, ignoring his touch. I still needed to be sure Suzu got back home safe.
"Puerto Rico."
