I woke up to an empty bedside. The sun lightly shining through the curtains.
I was in no hurry to get up and I couldn't stop my mind from thinking back to last night. Everything I said came out of nowhere but these feelings have been building for awhile. I thought after finding out about Suzu, they'd just disappear, like they never even existed.I remembered the look in his eye from that night, it wasn't like the first reaction when I pulled the gun on him. This time, he took it seriously but he still didn't try to stop me. It was like his life didn't matter to him, but it mattered to me. I tried so hard to keep him from getting underneath my skin, I never stopped to see that it was me underneath his skin all the time. I know there was a glint of hurt in his eyes that night.
Lino came in from the balcony, closing the door after him, "morning chula."
"Morning," I replied, getting up from the bed. He looked cautiously at me before turning toward the dresser, putting the handgun in his waistband.
"I take it you're waiting for me to take back what I said. Like I wasn't in my right mind or something," I guessed, going off by his behavior, "is that how it works? you make up your own moral code for everything."
"No," he stopped, and looked at me, "I've never cared about someone like this, Gloria. I don't know what the code is."
I didn't know what to say and I didn't have to as he continued, "I wake up everyday with this sick feeling, wondering who's going to die today, and it scares the shit of me, chula. Then I woke up this morning and it was gone. I think that scares me more."
This was about Poyo. I only knew him for a sort amount of time and most of that time he was an asshole. But it was about protecting Lino.
The one guy who protected him the most, had his back, was gone. Lino feels that his fear of someone dying has lifted cause it has already happened.
I conflicted him even more by laying all my feelings out there to him.
I walked up to him, bringing his hand in mine, "hey, you're in shock-"
He scoffed, looking down, "I don't think anything can shock me anymore, chula."
"What do you want me to do? How I can I help you?" I asked, sincerely wanting to know.
He stared long into my eyes, "don't go anywhere."
"I'm not." I reassured, not daring to break eye contact.
The bedroom door flew up, revealing the same woman from the airplane base. She eyed our hands together for a second then cleared her throat,
"Lino, the rest of the guys are here.""Thanks Gem," He said dismissively.
She stood at the door for another second or two then closed it.
I looked at him, suppressing a laugh, "Is she from here?"
"Gemma? No. She's from Washington" He answered, stopping himself from laughing too.
"And she's way over here?"
"That's her own story to tell. I better get down there, you coming?" He pulled away slightly, waiting on my answer
"Um, no. I'm gonna shower." I smiled. A nice, hot shower is exactly what I needed. He nodded, but quickly surprised me with a kiss. One hand on my waist, the other at the back of my neck.
We both pulled away, but our bodies still incredibly close.
He headed for the door, leaving my skin hot. That was the first time we really got intimate. Anything close to that was when he was rubbing my thigh, that was back at Suzu's house. That was different from now, but I'm not sure where to start.
