Cheetahpaw crouched down in the thick woods waiting for his unsuspecting prey. Almost ready.
"Slow down mouse brain! Your stepping on my tail!" A dainty female voice hissed a distance away.
Cheetahpaw adjusted himself accordingly. Now I'm ready. With all the speed in his body he leaped out of his hiding spot and bolted through the dead brush. He jumped onto a old path in front of two ginger cats. Giving a nice hiss he let them know who won.
"Of course." Then female one with white legs snipped.
They both dashed back the way they came. Cheetahpaw saw this challenge, and excepted.
The larger ginger cat ran slower then the female so he was the obvious target. Gracefully, Cheetahpaw speed up and tackled him from behind. The cat gave a big screech as he tumbled to the ground.
"Surrender!" Cheetahpaw snipped.
"NEVER!" The ginger cat replied with humor in his voice. All of the sudden Cheetahpaw was thrown away from ginger tom. He landed with a loud thud a distance away. The she-cat sat in front of him smirking.
"Let that be a lesson to you. No cat threatens my kin and gets away with it." The she-cat declared with dignity.
"Yeah Lunarpaw! You tell him!" The tom screeched as he hopped up. Lunarpaw rolled her eyes at her childish brother.
Cheetahpaw clumsily got to his feet."Where does a medicine cat apprentice learn to kick like that?!" Cheetahpaw snapped as he shook the dust off his pelt.
Lunarpaw licked her paw in pride as she responded. "It isn't just sorting herbs you know."
The tom bounced around his sister full of energy. "Eat that Cheetahpaw! We beat you!"
Lunarpaw looked offended. "We? Eclipsepaw, you did nothing but give our location away!"
Eclipsepaw wasn't hurt by this remark.
"Now can we please get that celandine!" Lunarpaw remarked as she whipped past Cheetahpaw and Eclipsepaw.
Eclipsepaw trotted after his sister. Cheetahpaw yawned and followed the ginger cats. Lunarpaw lead them through the shockingly dry RiverClan forest to what was left of the river. It seems like there is less and less water every day. Why would StarClan do this to us? First the Great Shacking and now this? Lunarpaw seemed just as disturbed. He couldn't say the same for Eclispepaw. For he couldn't tell the difference between a waterfall and a canyon. Nothing could possibly ruin that ginger cats mood.
"We should tell Quiverstar that the river is still receding." Lunarpaw affirmed, no more then a whisper.
Cheetahpaw gave a slow nod as he silently grieved for the beloved river. What are we without the river?
Eclipsepaw broke the dramatic silence. "Well...where is the celandine?"
Lunarpaw gave a sharp motion with her tail to a small patch of yellow flowers. Carefully, she pulled them out of the soil and left them to dangle out her mouth. For a moment everything was still. The few remaining birds stopped chirping. The leaves stopped blowing. The whole forest was morning. It was a much needed silence.
Cheetahpaw dreaded the return home. Lately everyone has been on edge. Losing access to fish took a tole on them all. Quiverstar does the best she can to keep everyone happy. But at times like this it just isn't enough. Cats are starting to turn on each other. Their very identity is drying away. What will we be when the river is completely gone? StoneClan? SunClan? DeathClan? Oh maybe LakeClan? That wouldn't be a huge change. It doesn't matter I guess. The only thing that seemed to matter now days was having the river back to its full glory. How long can we keep living like this?
