LOVE MY WAY

(SCENE 1, DETENTION)

GRACE

(GRACE sits there nervously looking at the door. She erratically taps her finger against the desk and starts to hyperventilate.)

UGH ! I can't take this anymore, when are they coming back ?

ALAN

Grace, just breathe (she breathes in) breathe (she breathes out) good.

GRACE

Ok (breathes out) I'm calm.

ALAN

Geez Grace why are you so nervous ?

GRACE

(sighs) I'm always nervous.

ALAN

Well. Don't be all detention is boredom and homework. So nothing to worry.

GRACE

Yeah that's not helping

ALAN

Is it your mom ?

GRACE

(she pauses and tenses up and sighs) Kind of.

ALAN

Why are you so afraid if she finds out ? does she h--

GRACE

Oh no no it's not like that it's just she expects so much out of me like I have to do everything perfect without fail. I worry when she finds out she'll just be very disappointed and upset with me.

ALAN

Well that's ridiculous no one is perfect.

GRACE

Yeah she says she wants the best possible future for me so I can have a good life or something like that. I guess that's why I take so many difficult classes.

ALAN

So she makes you take all those classes and do all that homework.

GRACE

Well no. I mean what else would I do.

ALAN

Uhh literally anything else. You could go out with friends, party, you know live.

GRACE

Yeah I can't do that.

ALAN

Well why not ?

GRACE

(chuckles) You sound like Julia.

ALAN

Julia ?

GRACE

She's my friend well kind of. She always tell me that I should hang out with her and her friends. Socialize more but I just can't enjoy myself with other people you know ?

ALAN

Yeah (laughs) you know it's funny I have the opposite problem I can't enjoy myself when I'm alone (pauses) but I'm alone a lot.

GRACE

Yeah I pride myself being really good at being alone.(realizes what she just said) Good lord that's depressing.
