I slowly opened my eyes but saw nothing yet. Just a white bright light. I felt no particular pain in my body. Where was I? The white light became blurred and I could hear a rhythmic beeping. Suddenly it came to me. The beautiful dresses, how Leah desperately trying to get on the radio, the silver car, how I tried to protect myself with my arms when the crash came and Leah's pretty lifeless face.
I breathed in quickly and then turned my gaze sharp. I found myself in an uncomfortable hospital bed. I had a venous catheter in arm attached to a bag of replacement drip, oxygen pin the nose and something on my finger which was connected to an appliance. I had lot of small white patches all over my arms and on my right eyebrow and chin where the glass had come in during the crash.
"Shh .. it's cool. We take good care of you." said a nurse quietly and smiled at me. I just looked at her. I did not know what to say. I did not even know if I could say anything.
"You were involved in a car crash. You've been away for two days. But it's normal." she said.
"I feel no pain." I said with my hoarse voice mostly to test if I could speak.
"We gave you a lot of painkillers." she said kindly.
"How are Leah ?!" I said desperately.
"She is not feeling anything either." she said and smiled kindly. It made me relieved. Leah felt good.
My nurse swapped out my drop bag.
"I have to look at another patient now. But you will not be alone. He has been sitting here since you came here and been really worried." she said, pointing to someone who was a bit away from my bed. Brent. He sat there and slept. I can not believe that Brent had been sitting here for 2 full days and just waiting for me to wake up. But why he sat with me and not with Leah. Sure I was his girlfriend, but Leah was his cousin. They were family. Family. He had been sitting with me out there on the road after the car crash too. Not with her. It made me almost angry that he cared more about me than her.
I saw him wake up to when the door slammed after nurse expired. He looked first at the door, then at me. When he saw that I was awake he stood up quickly up and took the chair and sat down next to me. He looked almost frightened. That he was sorry I could see. But I do not understand why. I was here. Probably concern.
He said nothing. He just sat and looked at me.
I smiled gently at him and got a small smile back.
"Hey .." he said quietly.
"Hey .." I said and could not help but smile.
"I've been so worried. I did not see the crash, but when I came to you, you both laid in the middle of the road among all the glass splinters. And then the ambulance arrived." he said with concern in his voice. When he told me I could see how it all replayed in my head. How I had laid there next to Leah, after trying to take us both out from the place, and cried when I thought that she had died. But she had not. She was here at the hospital too. She had been given pain killers, just like me. That's what the nurse had said.
"I'm just so glad you're here." Brent said and kissed me lightly on the mouth.
He looked at me. I could see the love in his eyes, hoping that he could see the same in mine.
The nurse came into the room again.
"Hey, you two." she said and smiled at us and walked longer walked up to us.
"So, for dinner, you get to eat real food and avoid drips and compensation." she told me happily.
"When will she come home?" asked Brent.
"Tomorrow probably if there would be something unexpected during the night." replied the nurse.
"I want to meet Leah." I said. Nurse looked at me and then at Brent.
"Not today.. We can not reach her ." the nurse said.
I understood what she meant. Leah had not come to mind yet. Which was understandable when she got a much worse hit than me.

The next day at lunch I stood with Brent in the cafeteria.
"What do you want? I'll buy it for you. Just sit down." he said.
"Oh! Take just anything. It does not matter." I said.
"Okay" he said and kissed me on the cheek and went to buy something. I walked around a bit around the cafeteria. There were a lot of rooms there.
'Heart Clinic, Brain Reception, Emergency operating room. ", I read on the doors. I stopped at a door that was almost close, but not quite. I looked carefully through the small gap.
"The man they crashed into just got an shock no injury. He went to seek help for the girls." said one woman.
"But who was the girl out there who woke up the other day?" asked one man.
"Cassandra Montoya." she said.
"Yes, It's too bad for her." said the man.
It came in an older woman from another door in the room. She looked like a real doctor with her white clothes.
"What does the report look like?" she asked.
And the next thing I wished I had never heard. I wanted to run away. I wanted to go back to Brent and pretend that nothing had happened. But how could I do that when I can barely stand on my own feet after what I just heard.
