Kate's POV

The silence in my room was an alien like sound to me. I always had some rock metal band playing on my stereo. It had been that way ever since my parents' shouts could be heard through the paper thin walls of our two story semi-d. I never liked it-the band-still didn't actually, but it had grown on me over the years.

I took a deep breath and surveyed the mess that was my room. I might be a girl but I was always lazy when it came to cleaning up my room. Besides, the state of my room didn't really matter that much. My parents were almost always away anyways. But that was till this afternoon when my dad dragged me out of bed and told or more like ordered me to clean up my room. Apparently, my room looked like a shipwreck and the next day was going to be my first day of school after the summer holidays.

Bits and pieces of paper, clothing materials and as well as pens and pencils were a part of my floor. CD's were placed all over my desk in no particular order and my bed hadn't been made. Okay, I must admit that maybe Dad was right about the whole shipwreck thing. The only thing that was most probably clean was my toilet. But then again, what did he expect a teenager's room to look like, a five star hotel?

I turned up my stereo out of habit and started cleaning up my room. Because despite the fact that Dad wouldn't even actually be around to inspect my room at the end of the day, I still felt obligated to try to clean up my room. I still hated the fact that I had to go back to the hell hole I called my school though. I was perfectly fine with staying at home and minding my own business for the whole three months of my summer holidays.

The only good thing coming out of it that I could think of was that I would be able to see my best friend, Marcie again. Well there was also Raisa, Jammy and Kira but I wasn't as close to them as I was with Marcie. Marcie has known me my whole life. I missed her a lot. Marcie always traveled during summer though. Her father has this business function that he hosted every year at different places around the world.

Yes, my best friend was a rich spoiled brat. But she had always been there for me when I needed her. My own mother treated her better than she had ever treated me. We did not always agree on everything but I knew that she always had my back. We had our fights but they were never big to begin with. I couldn't wait to see her again.

I wondered what life had in store for me that year. Senior year was going to be hell, that was for sure. But whatever it was, I hoped that it would be worth it in the end. I finally finished cleaning up my room after a few hours of hard work and pumped my fist into the air as my pride soared high. I started doing the macarena in my excitement and laughed the whole time knowing how stupid I looked.

I turned facing my door and stopped mid dance as my eyes widened in shock at the sight of my twin brother, Matt. Matt was leaning against my door frame with his iPhone in his hand, video taping me. He burst out laughing at my expression the same time I lunged for the phone in his hand. Unfortunately for me, his reflexes were too good and I ended up smacking him across his chest instead.

Matt continued to laugh at me as I tried to push him out of my room. He stumbled backwards a little but other than that, he didn't budge. I cursed my weak strength and blamed it on my being tired after cleaning up my room. I stomped back into my room and sat on my bed with my arms crossed in front of me and scowled at him. I waited for him to stop laughing and instead he smiled at me as he showed his white pearly teeth.

"Having fun? How wonderful!" I said, in a fake cheerful voice. "If you hadn't noticed, that was a closed party. It's just too bad you weren't invited." I said, menacingly as I glared at him.

"It's not a party without Matt Kingsley." He replied, with a cocky smirk plastered on his face and crossed his arms in front of him as he leaned on my door frame, trying to look cool. That look on his face might be able to get the girls at school to trample over themselves after him, but it definitely didn't work on me.

"Excuse me?" I said, grossed out and faked a gag as I tried to throw something at him. But all I had were a bunch of fluffy pillows. Because as of that moment, my room was spotless. I started to hate the fact that my room was clean and glared at him again as I threw the pillows I had at him.

"Ow, hey!" He shielded himself and backed out of my room. "Has anyone ever told you your radioactive glare could kill someone?" he mumbled, under his breath.

"I heard that!" I yelled after him and jumped off my bed ready to catch him as he ran away from me. I heard my cell phone ring and stopped in my tracks.

"Why did that boy have to be so lucky?" I asked myself as I turned off my stereo and flopped down onto my bed before I picked up my phone and answered the call.

I heard Marcie's ever so famous squeal from the other end of the line and smiled to myself. That girl was going to make me deaf one day. "Hey Mars, did you just get back from your trip?" I asked, after her excitement died down a little.

"Yup, Miami was amazing! Sunny beaches, barbecue parties, hot guys and surfing the waves. Definitely the best trip I've ever had! What did you do while I've been gone? Did you miss me?" She spoke so fast, it took me a moment before I could decipher what she had said.

"Uh lucky you, I got stuck at home with me, myself and I. Oh, and I had to clean my room. Of course I missed you, like did you even have to ask?"

She laughed and said, "Oh please, I bet you didn't actually clean up your room till like a few hours ago, right?"

"Ha, you know me so well"

"Of course I do! I just hope you didn't go and get drunk at a party. You know you would need me to bail you out of jail." She teased, and I scowled.

"You know I don't drink, I bet you're the one nursing a hangover right now. Go on, admit it."

"Okay, you caught me. But you should have some fun! Come on, you're eighteen and you're always so tense. Live a little."

"Are we seriously back to this again? Remind me again what happened when somebody decided to spike my drink at a party." I pointed out and particularly emphasized on 'somebody'.

"Oh come on, it was uncalled for. How was I supposed to know you would actually take that guy's dare seriously and call the cops on us. We were all intoxicated."

"And that my friend, is why you don't go off drinking at a party underage." I replied smugly.

"Yes, grandma."

"Ew... Don't 'grandma' me."

"Whatever. Guess who I met there!"

"Aww, you met someone in Miami? Did the poor guy jump off a cliff when you brutally rejected him?"

"What? Of course not!"

"Okay, fine. Who did you meet? Prince Charming?"

"No silly," she replied and started to giggle to herself.

"Wait, don't tell me. You met Justin Bieber, didn't you?" I replied, knowing Marcie hated Justin Bieber for reasons unknown to the world.

"Ha. Ha. That's just hilarious!" she said sarcastically, "but the answer is still a no. I met James Hawk!"

"Oh," wait. Did she just say what I think she said? Red alarms rang in my head as my phone slipped out of my hand and onto the soft mattress of my bed. She was kidding me, right? 'Geez, calm down girl. Just hear her out before you start freaking out over nothing!' I mentally lectured myself as I picked my phone back up. "Is it me, or did you just say James Hawk?"

"Of course I did. James's dad is one of my dad's business partners. Can you believe it though? James will be taking over his dad's business after he graduates from college." She gushed, and I was beginning to feel like she had a teeny weeny crush on him.

"Oh... How wonderful!" I replied, with fake enthusiasm.

Marcie rambled on about the things she did over the summer and I zoned out. Crap. This was utter crap. Out of all people, it just had to be James Hawk. Suddenly, the smell of something burnt caught my attention and I sat up a little too fast, my head started to spin.

"Damn, I've got to go Mars!" I shouted, the same time I threw my phone on my bed and sprinted out of my room, and down to the kitchen. I saw smoke coming from the stove and Matt as he stood there like a deer caught in the headlights.

'Great. This is just great.' I thought, as the heat from the stove activated the sprinklers above.
