boom after boom, the five teens turned around frantically, trying to locate where the sound was coming from.

"what the hell was that?" dariush asked. after he asked, everyone's phones began beeping.

"what does it say?" gabriel asked.

"it's the emergency broadcast system."

"all civilians are to evacuate metropolitan areas immediately. under no circumstances approach any unknown aircraft." alex read aloud. dariush gasped.

"it's the next seven eleven!" sierra squinted her eyes at him.

"we gotta get back to the van. anyone know the way?" alex asked.

"i do. follow me." gabriel instructed. everyone followed, except for dariush.

"whoa, slow your role, dora the explorer. all right, this is my clique. soldiers, out." he chuckled, turning in the opposite direction. everyone ignored him as usual and followed gabriel instead.

the group made their way down to the area by the lake, but nobody was there. it was completely empty.

"they left!" alex panted out.

"assholes!"

"probably got the emergency signal and went back to camp!" alex inferred. everyone jumped when they heard the booms again, but this time they could see the cause.

there were large explosions happening in the sky, and they were occurring all over.

not even paying attention, sierra almost fell back from looking at the sky for so long. luckily, someone caught her.

she looked up to see two chocolate brown eyes staring right back at her. she couldn't tell if she was overthinking, if gabriel was just really cute.

he smiled a bit, almost making her melt in her place.

"be careful." he whispered she nodded, not taking her eyes off of him for a moment.

"looks likes explosions in the upper atmosphere." alex explained as everyone except for gabriel began to pull out their phones.

"call and have them send the van to pick you up." gabriel instructed.

"it's dead! i had ninety percent two seconds ago! piece of shit boost mobile." dariush exclaimed.

"mines dead too." alex said.

everyone stopped as they began to hear whooshing in the distance. they're eyes widened as about five aircrafts zoomed past them, over the pond.

"oh my god, it's independence day!" gabriel announced. dariush looked at him as if he was the biggest dumbass in the world.

"it's june, gabriel!" dariush yelled. sierra rolled her eyes heavily.

"you idiot!" sierra exclaimed, pinching the bridge of her nose. dariush scoffed.

"maybe north korea is invading! zhenzhen, tell them to call it off!" dariush told her.

zhenzhen gave him a death stare as if she was holding herself from jumping on him. and honestly, sierra was too.

"we just need to wait here until the adults realize they left of here and come back."

dariush sighed and began to pace, so did sierra.

"oh, man! what if they never come back?! i'm gonna die here with you losers? i've never even had sex before!"

everyone paused and looked up at dariush. sierra squinted her eyes at him, something she did a lot towards the boy. gabriel looked at her and smiled.

"ima clear that up. i had sex... i had sex before. i mean, i haven't had sex with two girls at once. that's what i mean. i told you i had sex-"

"no." alex muttered to him before slapping his hand down.

"w-we're in the middle of world war three and you're worried about your virginity?! we're gonna d-d-" sierra ran her hand frantically through her hair as her stress began to build up.

"hey, it's okay, we're not gonna die!" he grabbed ahold of her shoulders, which almost instantly calmed her down.

something about his eyes and the way he looked at her gave her a really warm feeling.

"it's probably just a forest fire. we gotta get going. bears out here can be crazy!" gabriel announced.

"woah! slow your roll, did you just say bears? i don't do so well with bears, man! i'm not trying to get dicaprio'd up in here!" dariush panicked.

"no one does well with bears." gabriel told him.

"oh! woah, uh, ask werner herzog. grizzly man lived with those things for years. so, check that out." said dariush.

sierra chuckled. gabriel smiled at her.

"did you watch the end of that movie?" he asked.

"did i watch... i watched- no, i didn't watch-"

"okay, dude, gabriel's right. blackbears are opportunistic carnivores." alex told him.

"he's right. we w-wouldn't even get through the night in the wilderness." sierra stated.

"well then let's go!" dariush yelled. "come on!"

disappointment filled their eyes as they saw the camp was a ghost town. sierra spotted a sign and began to run into the camp. the others were yelling to see if anyone else was still there.

it was a cardboard box with spray paint on it.

"gone down mountain." dariush read.

"sh-shit! they left us, wh-what are we gonna do now, we're st-stu-" sierra began to freak out.

"hey, hey! it's okay, we'll figure this out. don't worry." gabriel grabbed her wrists and tried to calm her down. "just take deep breaths." he told her as he rubbed her arms. she stared at him before following what he said, which did help.

"thanks, gabriel." she told him. he zoned out for a few seconds, just standing at her. but he wasn't staring at her in particular. he was staring at her lips. he licked his lips then smiled.

"no problem."
