A Helping Hand

Light made his way downstairs after washing up and took his seat at the dinner table. He and his family took their helpings of food and passed the different assortments around. Once everyone had everything they wanted the four of them ate quietly.

"Sayu, how did you do on your mathematics exam?" Sachiko asked, wanting to break the silence.

"I got one of the highest scores!" Sayu said enthusiastically before turning to her older brother. "Thanks to you, Light. I owe you one." The young girl beamed up at her sibling. Light couldn't help but smile back at her.

"Just keep it up. I can't take all the credit." he said.

"Maybe you should become a teacher once you finish high school." Sayu suggested. "You explain everything really well. Even better than my math teacher."

Light chuckled. "Maybe. I'm not exactly sure what it is I want to study yet."

"Well, considering you helped us crack a few cases at the police department, maybe you should look into detective work." Soichiro said softly before taking a bite of rice.

"Speaking of detective work, Dad, how's the new case coming along?" Light treaded lightly, not wanting to sound too interested in the case.

"I can't say much. They really want to keep this one under wraps. So far, we've concluded that the public is segregating into two groups. Those who see Kira as a criminal himself, and those who worship him." The detective concluded.

"Isn't there anything that the police force can do? I mean, there has to be some way of finding him, or at least how he's able to kill so many people at once, and at the exact same time." Light added. Soichiro merely shook his head in disappointment.

"I wish there were. We've exhausted every solution, but nothing seems to add up. The only suggestion that might fit is that there's a second Kira helping with all the murders." Light nodded at this suggestion, though on the inside he was sweating just a bit. The police force was already on the lead of a second Kira, and they just started to dig into the investigation. Soon enough, the police force in America were interested. If they were to come over to help catch Kira, that would spell more trouble for Light and Misa.

"Now Dear, you know I don't like you discussing work at the table. You too, Light."

"R-Right..." Soichiro said, rubbing the back of his head in slight embarrassment.

"Sorry, Mom." Light apologized.

~Later that night~

Light heard a knock at his bedroom door, he shuffled a textbook over the Death Note as he heard the door creak open a jar.

"Son, I have a question for you." Soichiro's voice said as the door opened wider.

"What is it, Dad?" Light swiveled his chair around to face the older man.

"Earlier you seemed interested in the investigation. A little enthusiastic to say the least." Soichiro stated with a small chuckle.

"Oh... well, I... I suppose I'm just curious is all." Light admitted.

"Well, since your final exams are just around the corner, would you be interested in helping me out on this one? We really could use a brilliant mind on this case."

"S-Sure. I'd love to help." Light stated freely.

Soichiro nodded and smiled. "We meet the America police investigation in a few days. That gives you some time to study and take your exams before really settling into the case." Light nodded curtly.

"I'll study hard." Light said confidently.

"I know you'll do great, son. Goodnight."

"Night Dad."

That night, Light lay awake after finishing another round of names in the Death Note. As soon as he could get close with the American Task Force, the sooner he can get rid of them. He wondered if it were a good idea to trade half of his life for the Shinigami eyes that Misa had obtained. Light concluded that it would be best to just use Misa as a pawn for the time being. If he could get her close to the investigators that will be part of the Kira investigation, she'll be able to read their real names and Light could kill them all one by one. He smiled to himself at the thought. It wasn't just about peace, really. It was about winning too. The excitement about the game Light was playing was in the barter of getting away with it all.

Would he succeed?
