After the exams and a graduating ceremony, Light was brought in on the investigation. Soon, he was caught up to speed with how America was trying to help in solving the Kira case. They had a special detective, whose name was completely classified due to Kira's ability to kill with just a name, and a face. After a few weeks of speaking via audio, the detective, formally known as L, had declared that he was going to Japan to see everyone in person. Tonight was that night.
As the Kira investigation team of Japan assembled just outside the building they knew L would be staying in, Light was introduced to them all. Light deducted that each was most likely using an alias to cover their real names. He'd have to use Misa later to find out who they really were.
Matsuda, Aizawa, Mogi, Ide, and Ukita all introduced themselves to Light.
"So what do we know about this L guy Detective Yagami?" Matsuda asked as they all entered the building.
"The guy is brilliant and is known for cracking the hardest cases in American history of criminal investigation. His real name isn't even known by the police force he's associated with." Soichiro explained.
Before long, the group made it to the room the supposed L was staying in. They waited after Soichiro knocked on the door, announcing their arrival. L opened the door quietly and slowly.
"I'm Head Detective of the Japan Police Force, and these are my investigators in charge of helping with the case." Soichiro stated. "And my son, who is quite the brilliant mind in handling criminal cases."
Light stepped in after everyone else was inside the room. Light glanced at the man who opened the door, and couldn't help but hold his breath in anticipation. This was the most intelligent man America had to offer. Light was surprised to see the man was close to his age, if not a few years older. He was tall, dressed casually in a white t-shirt and jeans. L had long, shaggy black hair and matching eyes. Insomnia was evident by the dark rings under his eyes and the way the man slouched his shoulders.
"Hello, I am L." L introduced himself to Light.
'"I'm Light Yagami." Light outstretched his hand to L, who took it with his index finger and thumb. The man now known as L seemed socially lacking in everything. Light wondered where he even came from, and how this was the best America had to offer Japan for a mass murderer. Still, it could all have been a facade.
Light listened intently with the others as L explained the goings on for the next few months. There would be a special building for the team to stay and work the case, along with rooms for their loved ones or families to stay in if things got out of hand and people became endangered. It was very well thought out, Light thought to himself.
A few weeks had passed and the investigation commenced. L had placed hidden cameras throughout Detective Yagami's house, based on his permission. Light was under L's suspicion of being one of the two Kira's. Despite Soichiro's protests to his son being Kira, he allowed L to investigate, if nothing else to clear his son's name.
Light suspected as much, so he made Ryuk find all the bugs and wire taps in the house, but f course told him not to disturb them. Since only Light could see the Shinigami, it would be best that Ryuk be the one to find them all.
After all of them were found, Light sighed in content, looking at the rather mature magazine on his bed, all too aware of the cameras watching him.
"Ah, I get it now. You're putting on a front for the cameras to get the suspicions away from you. Smart." Ryuk commented, Light being the only one who can hear him. Light smiled to himself as he flipped through the pictures. He was playing the role of the innocent, typical, college grade boy.
"This is ridiculous." Soichiro huffed. "I can't believe my son would look through those crude magazines..."
"It's a typical thing for a boy his age. Completely normal really... too normal." L mumbled more to himself than to Detective Yagami.
"You can't honestly believe that my son is Kira."
"Actually I do. As of now I'm about 75% sure. But that clears your wife and daughter of suspicion. And of course, you are free of it as well. I've decided to remove the cameras. I have another idea in mind."
Light closed the magazine and flipped on the TV. The news broadcasted seventeen deaths all the while light was "reading" the magazine. He tried to hide the smirk on his face, knowing that Misa was the cause of this. She had done what he had asked perfectly. While Light was being investigated, Misa was to write down names in the notebook, clearing Light of any suspicions.
Or so he thought.
Still, Light now lay in bed with his mind far away from his Kira investigation, or his plans on keeping himself free of suspicion. His mind wandered to L, and how much time they had already spent together on the investigation. He now wondered how he would truly get L to believe he wasn't Kira. An idea popped into his head. He knew it would be a long shot, but he had to at least try.
Light would have to befriend his biggest enemy.
