I sat at my desk chair and reread the same words that I had read over and over again at the front of the Death Note...

-The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

I had written so many already. Countless names on countless pages of this gift from another world. The giver of said note was at my right shoulder, peering over curiously. I handed Ryuk an apple, feeling slightly annoyed by his presence. He took it graciously and munched as I continued to glance at the notebook.

-This note will not take affect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind while writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.

So many faces of so many heartless criminals. It brought a smile on my face knowing that their faces were no longer flashing on the television screen. No longer would they hurt innocent people or cause any more harm to society. It allowed my dream of everlasting peace to become more and more visible in my grasp. I clenched the pen in my hand tighter at the thought, still continuing to read.

-If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.

I thought back to the second and third time I had tested the notebook. The thug that was hit by a garbage truck as he was pursuing a young woman on the streets. The criminal that held innocent school children and teachers hostage. It was shocking yet adrenaline-filling to know that a simple notebook held the power of God.

-If the person's death is not specified, then the person will simply die of a heart attack.

This was my main tactic. If there was the slightest chance that the notebook would be found, I could simply say that I was keeping a log of all the deaths. Though I doubted that anyone would find it in the first place, after I had created the secret compartment under a false diary that I kept locked in my desk drawer. It was complete ingenuous.

-After writing the cause of death, details of the person's death should be written within the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

It was so simple, so fast, so easy, to end a life. If I wanted to, I could come up with the most creative and outrageous deaths imaginable. It was all my own power. Just at the front of my fingertips.

A knock on my bedroom door took me out of my reading.

"Who is it?" I called, quickly and quietly slipping the notebook back into it's original hiding place.

"It's me," Sayu called. "Father is home and dinner is ready." She called through the door.

"Alright, I'll be down in a second." I called back. Once the drawer was closed, I turned off my desk lamp and made my way towards the door. After dinner, another handful of criminals would face their deaths...
