Cartman must have left school early, as Craig didn't see him for the rest of the day. This wasn't really uncommon. Since Cartman had his own car, he would come and go to school as he pleased. Craig didn't think much of it.
He entered his house, and climbed the stairs. When he opened his door, he jumped back in shock. He felt his heart drop to the pit of his stomach with an echoey thud. Kenny and Cartman were both seated on his bed, talking. They both looked at him, and waved casually.
"What's going on?" Craig asked slowly, shutting the door behind him. Kenny smiled nervously, and began rubbing the back of his neck.
"Cartman found out."
* * *
"Kinny!?"
Cartman stumbled back a few feet, a look of pure terror plastered on his face. Kenny stood up. "C'mon, man. I told you I would end up leaving eventually, didn't I?"
"Yeah, Leaving! Not crashing at fucking Craig's place! Why are you here!? Where's your sister!? Kinny what the actual fuck!?"
Cartman was hysterical. He was angry, upset, relieved, and confused. Kenny watched as Cartman screamed his rant, knowing that it would be best to just allow him to get everything off his chest now. There wouldn't be any point in trying to talk to Cartman when he was in this state.
When he finally stopped yelling, Kenny took the opportunity to start explaining. Cartman deserved that much.
"I did leave," he started. "I went all the way to Denver, and dropped Karen off with Kevin and his girlfriend. But I came back, and my car broke down, and I just came to the house of the nearest person I knew. He agreed to hide me."
Cartman stared back with wide eyes. He was obviously alarmed. Kenny began to feel guilty for this. Maybe he should have called Cartman, or told him beforehand, instead of leaving him like everyone else.
Cartman breathed in deeply, probably to relax himself. "Just... why Craig? You know you could have come to my place."
Kenny shrugged. "Well, I thought about getting Craig to take me to your house, but then I thought about it a little more. People might have started expecting me to be there." Cartman opened his mouth to protest, but Kenny was right. Cartman's house had to be looked through by the cops to make sure he wasn't hiding the runaway. Kenny would have been found for sure.
"Okay... so what now? Do I just leave and pretend nothing ever happened?"
Kenny shrugged. "I don't know. Why'd you even come over here in the first place?"
"Craig was acting weird at school, like he was hiding something."
"Yeah, figures," Kenny said, remembering Craig's terrible acting skills. Maybe he should have crashed at Tweek's instead. He wasn't friends with him either, and that guy is always nervous about something, so he wouldn't be acting suspicious at school when he freaked out.
"I came over here because I thought he might be hiding something that had to do with you leaving," Cartman said. He then looked at Kenny. "I guess I was right."
They sat down on the bed, and continued to talk. Kenny said everything he needed to say, and Cartman informed him on all the drama that had been going on at school. Most of the attention was on Kenny's absence, though.
"Why do so many people suddenly care!?" Kenny snapped, throwing his arms in the air. "I've died in front of them so many times before, and they never cared then! Why is this different!?"
Cartman shrugged. "I don't know, man," he admitted.
That was their main reason for being so close. Cartman was the only person who could see Kenny die, every single time. He witnessed it over and over again, to the point where he became unphased by seeing him repeatedly come to his brutal demise. But Kyle, Stan, Craig, and everyone else never recalled it the day following Kenny's death. They acted as if it never happened.
"I don't get it," Kenny admitted. It was then that his attention was taken off of the topic by the sound of the front door slamming shut. Both he and Cartman froze, and exchanged glances.
"Should I leave?" Cartman asked. Kenny shook his head.
"There's no point. Craig should know."
The bedroom door opened, and Craig nearly jumped out of his skin at the sight of the two sitting on his bed.
They both looked at him, and waved as casually as they could.
"What's going on?" Craig asked slowly, shutting the door behind him. Kenny smiled nervously, and began rubbing the back of his neck.
"Cartman found out."
"I see that," Craig said, never taking his eyes off of Cartman. He felt uncomfortable with the sociopathic fat kid in his bedroom. This was half of the group that got him shipped off to a foreign country, he had a right to be anxious. He looked at Kenny, narrowing his eyes at him. "So what? I leave for school and you decide to have a party? I thought you didn't want anyone knowing."
"Hey, you did this to me," Kenny argued. "Cartman said you were acting weird at school."
"So you broke into my house?" Craig asked Cartman, who simply shrugged his shoulders in response.
"Come on, Craig. Don't tell me you're surprised by this."
"I'm definitely not," Craig assured him. "Just a little uncomfortable with it."
