A Locked Box

Chapter 30

   Slip in. Slip out. No witnesses and no emotions. Those were the rules Kat had lived by for years and that last one was important. Kat was raging with them and she knew it could get her and some many others killed.

   She froze at the thought of Jake and Devin. Her hands shook as they gripped the metal railing before her. She took a shuddering breath before she removed them and surveyed the rushing river below.

   "Looks like a kitty is lost." The voice sneered from behind her. Kat made sure she stayed statue-like. The heavy footsteps stopped to her right. "Where are your friends?"

   She said nothing. He leaned against the railing lightly. "Aw, don't be so hard on me, Kitty Kat."

   In one fluid motion, she was holding his body over the railing, hand tightening on his throat. "You're going to tell me everything you know."

   "You know you won't get much out of this." He chuckled, only causing Kat's grip to increase. She stared with a hot fire in her onyx eyes and expressionless face. He coughed at the pressure and changed his plea. "You don't want to kill me. I can see it in your eyes."

   Her grip tightened even more. She met his now fearful eyes. "Just because I don't want to doesn't mean I'm not capable. You would deserve far more for the grief you've caused." She growled out.

   His eyes widened. "Kitty Kat, you don't have to--" He was silenced by the flick of Kat's wrist. She let go of his body and he slipped into the freezing river below. The splash was loud in Kat's ears as she turned around to check for witnesses. The streets were just as deserted as before. That was one off the list.

   She leaned against the railing, eyes glued to the hotel room key card in her hands. She stopped the trembling in her hands before she started towards the building. She would get them all even if it killed her.
