Amy woke up on the cement ground, a crowd surrounding her. She couldn't hear the crowd but she could tell they were speaking. She saw their mouths moving, shocked expressions, flashes of light. Why couldn't she hear? Someone hoisted her off the ground. She saw blood where her head had been. She saw phones but didn't hear the clicking of camera apps. Why couldn't she hear?

She couldn't hear the nurse either, or the tapping of her mother's shoe on the hospital floor. The nurse kept motioning to her ears. Finally Amy understood: she was deaf, her brain damaged.
