Mate.

I sniffed the air and followed the alluring scent trail down the corridor and through a thick metal door with a sign that said morgue. I scrunched up my nose at the chemical smell assaulting my nostrils once I entered, supposedly to cover up the odor of decaying bodies which it clearly failed at. I could still make it out and it was threatening to overwhelm me but I concentrated on the strongest fragrance in the room, drawing me closer.

"She was pregnant when she died." Thanatos told me without bothering to greet me or look up. "Six months, I'd say."

Anyone who barely knew him would be appalled by the lack of emotion in his voice and how matter of factly he stated this but I could tell it was deeply disturbing him. He was working hard to resolve the dragon pox issue, spending most of his time at the hospital and he wasn't even receiving a thank you for it. Everybody still treated him like an outcast, avoiding him and whispering when they saw him walk through the halls of the hospital.

"You have been stuck in here for several hours." I reminded him cautiously. "You need to take a break. Zoe is asking for you."

He huffed, avoiding to look at me. Instead he concentrated on the body in front of him, getting more and more flustered until he put the scalpel away, throwing the blue gloves into the trash. A sigh escaped his lips as he was whiping an invisible line of sweat away from his forehead. I was accustomed well enough with his habits to know that this gesture was just a distraction to get him a few more seconds to think of a reply.

"I'm sorry." He apologized, briefly glancing at me. "This is getting out of hand and I'm trying to get on top of the situation but I can't figure it out."

He seemed very upset and just pulled a new pair of gloves out of a box and put them back on. My comment seemed to have disturbed him and he was still working on dealing with it. I hadn't intended to upset him, I just wanted him to know that his family missed him terribly. It by no means was supposed to blame him for the situation, I knew how important his work here was and respected him for sacrificing so much time, energy and ressources for this cause.

"I will be done in a few minutes." He let me know before I could say something.

I decided to wait for him, leaning against the other marble autopsy table while he put the organs back in and sewed the body shut. He tried to hide a yawn while he threw the second set of gloves into trash where it landed upon a pile of other gloves he had used over the course of the day. The trash can itself was overflowing by now, a few gloves lying on the ground and visualizing how much time he had spent in here, trying to fix an issue he hadn't created.

"I terribly missed you." I hummed, taking his hand as he walked over to me. "Both of us missed you."

He let me guide him through the empty corridors and out through the back door while being absolutely quiet, just following my lead without questioning why we didn't take the front door. Thankfully, we didn't run into any people on the way, I didn't want him to be more stressed than he already was while being forced into this situation. He was uncomfortable around people anyway and civilians were still judging him once they laid their eyes on him.

"I want to show you something before we go home." I smiled at him, giving his hand a squeeze. "It's right around the corner." 

He side glanced at me and barely managed to hide his frown, looking displeased. I knew he wasn't too keen on being surprised but I hoped the outcome was going to overpower the cost. I wanted to give him something he could look back upon when working that was something positive, a memory he could enjoy while being around sadness, death and failure. I wouldn't have put him in this situation of I didn't think it was going to be worth it.
