Hello?

Is there anyone here?

Or am I totally alone... locked in the dark abyss of my mind?

When I woke up the next day, I knew that someone had taken control of me.

It was as though my body did not obey my thoughts anymore. Instead, it obeyed someone elses.

Sometimes, I hear echoes of laughter, but I don't know whether it is just my imagination, or whether it is the laughter of the dark thing that controls my movements now.

At least that something can't access my mind, and take complete control of my thoughts. At least I'm not brainwashed. I tried to comfort myself.

However, I feel as though I am drowning in panic and horror.

What is this magic? As a mage, I had natural defences against things such as the possession of my body, but somehow whoever put this something inside me.

What have I even done? I did not know any so-called Dark Mages, and I don't think I offended any of them. Plus, I don't even live in the capital of the Land of Dawn!

Why?
_____________
Hanekage's POV

Huh, this girl doesn't even know who possessed her, the demon thought while listening to what Kagura thought.

The 'something' possessing Kagura was called Hanekage, a powerful demon who lived in the sword of the most powerful ninja in the Land of Dawn, Hanzo.

As Hanekage owed a debt to Hanzo, Hanzo finally decided to collect on it, 7 years after he first obtained the Ame no Habakiri, the legendary sword that contained Hanekage.

"Hanekage, I want you to possess this girl. I will direct you later on, after you have possessed her. I'm collecting on the favor that you promised me when I slew those ninjas for you." Hanzo grinned as he looked down at Ame no Habakiri, which was lying on the large black stone that Kagura had seen in her dream. Or should I say possession?

The clearing in which Kagura had gone to was actually Hanzo's secret lair. Nearby the clearing, there was a dark cave in which Hanzo lived.

Hanzo is eighteen this year, two years older than Hanabi.

Hanekage replied, "Of course, my lord. Why do you want me to possess her though?" Hanekage had never seen Hanzo being interested in anything or anyone else besides power. As such, the demon was curious.

"I love the girl that she is close to, Hanekage."

A moment.

"I have spent many years away from this place, but I always kept her in my heart. Now, when I am about to reach the pinnacle of ninjitsu, I will get her."

"Of course, my lord. I will help you to win her love to you."

Hanekage was shocked. He had not even heard a whisper about the girl from him. Curious to find out more, the demon accessed Hanzo's memories— something only he could do without detection from the ninja— to learn about Hanzo's connection to the girl.

The blood-red demon was amused to find out that Hanzo was childhood best friends with the girl, who was called Hanabi, before he set out to explore the Land of Dawn when he was eleven years old.

Although he was young, he still insisted on making the journey as it was what he called a 'rite of passage' to becoming a proper ninja. To him, he believed that he must learn about the world's evil to be able to fight and conquer it.

Even Hanabi could not persuade him to stay.
_________
Memory #1
"Hanzo, don't leave! Please!"

What caused Hanzo to stop and look back was the word 'please'. To most people, saying please was being polite or courteous, and something normal, but Hanabi never said please.

Hanabi was standing a few metres behind Hanzo, who was carrying a large backpack, and wearing a weapons belt carrying a huge assortment of katanas, shurikens and a couple of daggers. Young but already blessed with angular features and striking copper-red hair, many young girls and even girls older than him had been attracted to him. However, he only chose to talk to one girl, which was his neighbour and best friend, Hanabi.

Right now, Hanzo was standing at the start of the copperstone road that winded through the Enchanted Forest. Exasperated, Hanzo growled, startling the nine year-old Hanabi, who was dressed in a black dress with a wavy skirt, secured by a golden sash. With her usual pink ribbon used to tie her hair into a ponytail, Hanabi looked like an innocent and cute little girl, but once you saw her fight, you would think otherwise.

"Stop following me! You know that I'm going on this journey, even if everyone begs me not to. Even you."

"Well, I can try, right? Theres nothing wrong with that." Hanabi retorted, glaring at the copper-haired ninja.

"But I don't want you to try and persuade me to stay! GO HOME, HANABI. I DON'T NEED YOU HERE, I DON't NEED YOU IN MY LIFE. GO AWAY!"

Silence.

Hanzo looked at Hanabi, who was trembling like a leaf, biting her lips. Tears filled her eyes.

Hanzo realised what he had actually said, and was overcome with a wave of horror. He had just been really exasperated, as so many people had already done what Hanabi had done, and he had enough.

Why did he have to vent all his anger on his best friend?

"Hanabi, wait! I'm sorry! I- "

His words met empty air.

His outstretched hand fell to his side.

After a long while of staring into empty space, Hanzo sighed and turned to face the forest. Pulling his black backpack closer to him, he stood up straighter, remembering what he wanted to do, and embarked on his journey.
____________
Memory #2
Years later, during his travels, Hanzo still thought of the raven-haired girl that he left behind.

Everywhere he went, although he gained power and people's fear, he never felt complete. It was as though there was a hole in his heart, that was waiting and waiting to be filled with someone.

It was then that Hanzo realised that he really missed his close companion, and his best friend.

He needed her.

So on one of the nights just like the one when he left, Hanzo crept back to Seimei Village to visit Hanabi.

His presence was what Hayabusa had sensed on the cherry blossom hill, and Hanzo had been filled with a boiling hatred for Hayabusa once he saw Hanabi walking with him.

I am going to get Hanabi back, thought Hanzo. No other male is allowed to even come a few metres from her, except me. Possessiveness kicked in.

Even I have to march through heaven and hell, even if she does not love me back, I will get her.

She is mine.
___________
Hanekage's POV

Hmm, Hanekage thought after viewing Hanzo's memories.

He never knew that the cold and ruthless owner of the Ame no Habakiri could actually be so... attached... to another human being.

This is going to be interesting.

The demon's lips curled into a knife-like smile.

Let the fun begin.
