12 - Trying to Sell Me Beets

~Kate's POV~

I fell asleep on the couch while watching The Office. As I was drifting off to sleep, I thought I would dream about one of my issues, like Matt or my mother not being able to find a job. She'd been fired for not working as well as she used to. The woman lost her soulmate! How could she focus on work after that?! She came home bearing the terrible news with a gloomy face. That night, we stayed up eating ice cream and singing karaoke.

 I had the strangest dream, though. A dream with Dwight Schrute, the weird character in The Office. You wanna know what he was doing? No, he wasn't educating me on bears or anything about animals.

He was trying to sell me beets.

Beets, for Pete's sake! As I thought about all of this with my face looking all relaxed, my mother came bursting through the door. I sat up immediately and looked towards the door. She turned on the hallway light and I saw her with a huge smile plastered on her face.

"Mom, what's with the smile?," I asked her, getting up and walking up to her.

"What smile," She responded with an even BIGGER smile, if that was even possible.

"Come, help me with these bags!" She added on. I shuffled to her a little faster and grabbed some bags from her hands.

"Okay, no smile.. What's with the bags, then?" I smiled up to her.

"Ooh, do I have news for you!" She responded and lightly pushed me to the dining table. I set the bags down near the table and she sat down next to me. That smile stayed there, never moving an inch smaller.

"I found a job." 

Those four words made me ecstatic. I rose out of my seat and my eyebrows lifted.

"Mom, are you serious?!" I asked her. All she did was grin.

"Mother, don't play with me! Did you really?"

"Yes, honey, I did," She said as I sat back down. "but there is one condition.." Of course, I thought.

"we need to move to Philly, where I'll be working." She sighed. 

"WHAT?" I said without thinking. Matt's there! I can't be near him! On the other hand, my mother found a job! I can't disappoint her..

"Listen, the pay is enough for us to live how we've always wanted to! Plus, the house is already covered! The company supplies a house to live in. It's a really nice house.." My mother said. She's really not helping, huh?

"Okay. I'll go pack." I sighed as I walked to my room. How could this be happening? This surely isn't a coincidence! The day after I met Matthew is the day my mother decided we move to Philadelphia. I'm rarely one for believing in miracles or in good karma, but what's going on right now might just be one of the two.

I really hate moving, actually. You have to clean up the entire house. The whole thing! Pack your microwave, your electronic refrigerator, and the kids, will you? Oh, don't forget to take the infestation of rats with you, too. Maybe you'll have still have some space to put your mattresses and your cabinets.

After a long day of packing up just my room, I finally see what this room looked like when I moved into it. It's already dark out and my mother had finished packing her room before me. She moved on to the kitchen as soon as she told me she was done. I can't believe she's excited about Philly. I mean, to be fair, she doesn't know anybody in Philly. Not that I know of. Wait, does she know anybody there?

That doesn't matter anymore! What matters is the fact that I'm in devils' reach. There's no escaping him now. I just sold myself off. It's over. I'm ruined!

It's still a work in progress, but I really hope people like it. It's not a fanfiction, but it is a story kind of like this.

FUN FACT: I wrote this chapter in less than an hour and I've had to pee since I started.
