The sun shined brightly through the camp, warming everything in its path. Many cats sprawled out, gladly soaking up its rays. Moonkit, and her brothers Fallenkit and Blackkit, stumbled out of the nursery, too excited to sit still. Today was the day they'd all be made apprentices, training to become full warriors, where they would defend their clan, and hunt freely within the reigns of their territory. Fallenkit would trace the path of a medicine cat, bound only to Starclan's will, healing and helping any cat, without regards to clan or heritage.
Blossomfall, their mother walked out of the nursery behind the kits, stretching out her hind legs. "If you three don't stop jumping about, I'll drag you back into the nursery by your tails,"
"Yes mother," Fallenkit said, settling down beside Blossomfall, while the other two kept running around.
"I hope their mentors will be able to handle them," Blossomfall muttered, mainly to herself, although Fallenkit heard it.
Moonkit was the first to notice Brightstar pad out of her den and wrap her tail around her paws, waiting to make sure every cat was back in camp. Once the sunhigh hunting patrol dropped their load of prey onto the fresh kill pile, Brightstar began the ceremony.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here beneath the highledge," Her voice echoed through the camp, and every cat joined together, waiting to watch the kits become apprentices.
"Moonkit, you have reached your sixth moon, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Moonpaw. Stormcloud, even though your roots don't run within the clans, you have earned your place as a warrior and now it's time for you to mentor. I hope you pass down your courage and spirit to this young cat, and teach Moonpaw all you know," Moonpaw padded up to Stormcloud, and touched his nose. Every nerve in Moonpaw's body was tensed. A kittypet for a mentor. Why couldn't I get a real warrior? Anger coursed through her body, but she didn't show it.
The ceremony went on, and Blackpaw's mentor became Molewhisker and Fallenpaw was given to Ambermoon.
"Moonpaw, we're going to explore the territory," Stormcloud called out, padding up to her side a moment later.
"Is Blackkit- Er, Blackpaw coming with us?" She asked glancing to her brother's position by the thorn barrier with Molewhisker.
"He is. Molewhisker, are you ready?"
"Yeah one moment," Molewhisker said something to Blackpaw, then bounded off to Alderheart. Alderheart nodded thoughtfully, then the cats led the way out of the camp and into the forest. Molewhisker, being the senior warrior of the group led the way, curving around trees and bushes. The land was beautiful; Bright green grass covered every mouse length of the forest floor, and luscious trees and undergrowth decorated the vast land. Coming up on a rise, Molewhisker held up his tail, signaling for a stop. Bounding past her mentor, Moonpaw came up between Ambermoon and Fallenpaw and gaped at the scene before her.
The biggest pool of water stretched before her, glittering like stars in a night sky. Moonpaw could see all the way to the other side, where she guessed Riverclan lived. To the left, the forest undergrowth dissipated and cleaned out completely, revealing open moorlands with rolling hills. In the opposite direction, maples and oaks mingled with pine trees, and soon faded into nothing but. That must be Shadowclan's territory. Moonpaw thought with a shiver. The ground wasn't littered with holly and elder bushes like their land, but rather pine needles, giving up a lot of hiding and ambushing places.
Fallenpaw was the first to move, taking a few paw steps down the slope, but as soon as he set foot, slippery grass pulled him down, and Fallenpaw tumbled a few fox lengths before he hit the trunk of an old tree.
