Chapter Seventeen - Somebody to Her

Getting up and ready for school the next morning was tough. We, being Devon and I, were exhausted and not very enthusiastic about having to get up from our warm nest on the floor and having to go to school. Devon had luckily packed a spare pair of black jeans and a white t-shirt in his rucksack when he came over so he wouldn't start to stink throughout school. Also, it would look suspicious if he came in wearing the same clothes as the day before; teenagers thought like that and the next moment we would be the talk of the school.

After we begrudgingly got ready and slouched down the stairs, we entered the kitchen and found my mother standing there, holding our journal, reading it while she cooked pancakes. She was flicking through it, looking at the pictures and reading the annotation. "What are you going to be doing today? I hope it's another challenge because the pictures from your previous ones are hilarious."

"Glad you think so." The butterfly boy said, trying - and failing - to stifle a yawn. He reminded me of a cat when he yawned; his eyes went all squinty and he seemed to curl up, his shoulders pulling up like a tortoise shell while he did it. I smiled as he straightened himself out, his while expression reading tired and I would rather be in bed. My mum smiled and placed the journal down on the table and continued to serve up the pancakes. As she put Devon's plate down in front of him, along with his cup of 'morning milk', she kissed his cheek and ruffled his already messy hair.

"I am so glad Holland found somebody like you." She said, patting his shoulder and walking out of the kitchen, humming a happy tune. Devon just gave me the look, his glasses slipping down his nose as he gave me a small smirk, his eyes shining. It was the sort of look that made me smile myself.

"See, you're lucky to have me as your temporary husband." He said, picking up his fork and taking a bite out of his pancake. "Your mum can cook really well. I don't even know where you came from, yellow tips. Mars, probably."

"You're the only one I think can get away with calling me that. You wouldn't want me to give you unpasteurized goat milk now, would you?" I said, causing Devon to snort into his cup of milk.

"God, I love you so much, dearly beloved. I really do. You are just so cool." He said, licking away the moustache his drink had given him. "But what happens when all this is over? Like, when we're not married anymore? And we don't have to fill out a journal, or do weird things? What happens when we don't have what's bringing us together?" Devon then said, causing me to look up from my pancake. His face had gone from a big, dimpled smile to a straight and slightly sombre expression. I sighed and relaxed my shoulders.

"Devon, if you want us to be, we're still going to be friends. Just because we won't be writing in our journal doesn't mean I can't attempt to drown you anymore. Yes, this whole 'Operation Marriage' sparked whatever this friendship even is, but it isn't the bare minimum needed for keeping it going. It looks like you're stuck with me for a little while after this final week and a bit of this challenge is over."

"I think I'm actually okay with that." The butterfly boy replied, sipping his milk thoughtfully. He then stopped drinking it and gave me a funny look. "You absolutely, one hundred per cent sure this milk is pasteurized? I mean, look at what you've done you little loser! You've got me all paranoid now."

"A to Z animals!" Mrs Kampe shouted out to us all as we sat down in the gym. "This is a rather sweet task thought up by Andrew Haddott, so congratulations and extra points to him! This fun task involves each member of the couple thinking up and writing about the other member as if they were an animal found in an encyclopedia. You are to come up with a suitable name for the member and then write the paragraph professionally. If you want, you can add pictures onto your A3 page. Once every couple is done, the pages are going to be stuck together to make a book. The front cover has been designed and once all the pages have been done, a contents page will be made. This book is going to then going to be printed professionally, with a real hardback cover and glossy pages, and one will be given out to every student in this year, almost like the year books found outside the UK. I think this idea is a great idea as everyone will have something written about them. So, do you understand?"
